The Annual Breitling at Banks Lyon Abbeystead Clay Pigeon Shoot 2011

Duke of Westminster helps Banks Lyon Jewellers raise £17,600 for charity

A RECORD £17,600 was raised for charity when one of the North’s top jewellers hosted a glamorous clay pigeon shoot.

Some 200 guests turned out for the fourth Breitling at Banks Lyon Abbeystead Clay Pigeon Shoot, which was held on the Duke of Westminster’s estate near Lancaster on Saturday (May 21).

Organised by Lancaster and London based PR and marketing firm Samuelson Wylie Associates, with the kind permission of His Grace, the event saw teams of four travel from across the North to compete for the chance to win a host of prizes including £15,000 worth of Breitling watches.

The day concluded with an auction that raised an impressive £17,600 for the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity after guests, including world superbike legend Carl Fogarty, dug deep for lots including diamond jewellery, luxury hotel breaks, helicopter flights and stunning pieces by some of the region’s top game artists.

After some challenging clays the team with the highest score was the Preston-based Milkshakers – Jonathan Simpson, Nicola Pattison, Peter Halshaw and Matthew Marsden. Nicola was also one of two top scoring ladies on the day who walked away with a rare Breitling leather flying jacket. Lancashire men James Ainscough, Michael Fort, Simon Coakley and Brent Forbes won the hotly anticipated draw for four striking Breitling Superocean watches.

Rodney Banks-Lyon, of Banks Lyon Jewellers of Lancaster, said: “This was our fourth such event and the biggest and best yet. Without exception everyone had a fantastic day and we are thrilled to have raised so much for the Soldiers’ Charity, which is a truly wonderful cause. Our thanks must go to His Grace, for allowing us to use his beautiful estate, and all those who gave so generously on the day – whether it be the volunteers, those who donated some beautiful auction prizes, or our guests who gave so generously. The standard of shooting on the day was excellent and it was our pleasure to welcome many new faces who we hope to see again.”

Lt. Col. Philip Aindow, North West Regional Director of ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “As a charity we have seen the number of applications for support rise by 30% over the past two years & by 2015 we will need to double our income to £14 million. All of that money comes from public donations & we’re very grateful for events such as the Breitling at Banks Lyon Abbeystead Clay Pigeon Shoot, which was not only a splendid day out but raised a lot of money.”

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity – For Soldiers > For Life

Formerly the Army Benevolent Fund, the Soldiers’ Charity gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. From help with carehome fees, respite breaks and mobility assistance to debt relief and educational bursaries, it has offered a lifeline to the men and women who put everything on the line for their country, since 1944.

The charity has seen a 30% rise over the past two years, in applications from soldiers who have taken part in previous and current conflicts, and it currently raises £7 million a year to meet this need.

As a result of current operations it is anticipated that the requests for assistance will rise significantly in the coming years. It is therefore the aim of The Soldiers’ Charity to increase fundraising to £14 million a year by 2015 to be sure each and every soldier that needs its help receives it. Every penny it raises is through public donations. For more information visit www.soldierscharity.org
