Hollywood’s Affair with the Luxury Watch: Off Screen

Having looked at the luxury watch as it appears on screen in the movie industry, today we turn to the other side of the coin: the stars themselves. We are, as a society, entranced by their glamour and style – and the luxury watch is often a prominent part of that style.

The Cannes Film Festival

The most prestigious film festival in the world is currently underway in Cannes, on the French Riviera, and many of the world’s favourite luxury watch brands will no doubt be represented on the red carpet. None, however, will be more present than Chopard, who have been official partners of the festival since 1998, when the celebrated watch and jewellery company redesigned the Palme d’Or, the festival’s most prestigious prize. They also present the Trophee Chopard to talented young actors, as well as hosting one of the event’s must-attend parties.

The Red Carpet

At any event, whether it be a film premiere or an awards ceremony, keen-eyed celebrity spotters examine every article that the stars choose to wear, and that certainly includes the watches. At this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, a number of prestigious timepieces were noted. Notably, Jared Leto sported a watch from the upcoming Cle de Cartier collection, becoming the first star seen wearing a piece from this brand-new range. Host Neil Patrick Harris changed his watch along with the rest of his wardrobe during the event, showing off pieces from Audemars Piguet, Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Eddie Redmayne, who took home the Best Actor award for his part in The Theory of Everything, sported a watch from the Chopard LUC collection.

Brand Ambassadors

Many Hollywood stars act as ambassadors for brands, lending their celebrity status and glamour to advertisements and the like. The list is extensive; Omega has George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Zhang Ziyi under its wing, whilst Leonardo di Caprio represents TAG Heuer (and both Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt have previously featured on their roster). Kate Winslet is one of Longines’ “ambassadors of elegance”, as is TV star Simon Baker, who introduced the Longines Saint-Imier collection. Breitling, with their long association with the aviation industry, chose to partner with actor and pilot John Travolta.

Personal Possessions

Of course, many of Hollywood’s stars also have personal favourites; they aren’t wearing a particular brand because of a contract, but simply because they want to! Harrison Ford is known to own a watch from the Breitling Aerospace family, and has often been pictured wearing it. Orlando Bloom, of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean fame, is also a vintage watch enthusiast; he is believed to own more than forty, including six rare Rolex models which were stolen in a burglary in 2009 by a gang known as “The Bling Ring”.  Fellow Lord of the Rings actor Karl Urban, also known for his roles in Star Trek and Dredd, is a fan of Tag Heuer; he bought a timepiece from the TAG Heuer Aquaracer assemblage in Cape Town whilst filming Dredd, and liked it so much he later bought another.
