Since this afternoon is sadly not graced by Grand Prix excitement, we thought that we would fill the gap left in the Formula 1 calendar with a little look at one of the biggest watch brands in the racing world, TAG Heuer. Unlike some sponsors, you won’t see large banners proclaiming the TAG name on hairpins all over the world; rather, they have for many years taken a more personal approach to sponsoring the pinnacle of motorsport.
This sponsorship is often at its most visible on the podium: on the wrists of the best of the best.
In this blog we are taking a look at three of the most well known and widely talented F1 drivers ever to attach a TAG Heuer watch to their wrist. First on this list is one of the most legendary drivers in history.
Ayrton Senna (3 championships, 41 race wins)
The contentious Brazilian is arguably the best driver ever to have taken the wheel. Despite not being the most successful driver – he was not able to claim more race wins or titles than other drivers during his career – he was picked by Michael Schumacher (who was the most successful F1 driver) as the best driver in the sport.
To watch Senna drive is to watch poetry in motion; he was a maestro who seemed to draw a line through physics with every turn of the wheel.
This master of lap times, of course, had a favourite brand of watch, and, given the title, we think that you have probably already guessed it. The TAG Heuer S/el, Ref. S25.706C was a favourite of Senna’s and is closely associated with him to this day.
In the last 8 years, it has been hard to ignore this young Brit. From his début in 2007, where he finished 3rd, to the current season in which he has won 3 of the 5 races so far, Lewis Hamilton has always been a force to be reckoned with.
Lewis’ style of driving, his aggression and outright speed are reminiscent of his hero Senna, and another area in which the two are simpatico is their choice in watches. During his time with Mclaren, Hamilton proudly sported TAG Heuer watches and he could be seen proudly sporting a Grand Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date Chronograph on the winning step of the 2009 Singapore Grand Prix podium.
Of all the drivers on the grid, Jenson is a fan favourite absolutely everywhere he goes; whether he is winning, losing, or indeed retiring from the race, the fans are always behind him. His affable and relaxed demeanour, however, disguises a true master of speed.
Known for his exceptional consistency and virtuoso performances in the wet, Jenson is a man who relies on quality design and reliability. Unfortunately at the moment, his McLaren isn’t exactly filling these requirements. Thankfully, though, he can still rely on his trusty TAG Heuer watch to keep track of his lap times, no matter how long they are.
