TAG Heuer’s Button Confirmed For McLaren

It’s been one of the strangest situations in Formula 1 in recent years, but, after what seems like an almost interminable wait, TAG Heuer ambassador Jenson Button has finally been confirmed to be driving for McLaren over the next season. In actual fact, the BBC reports an insider source that states the possibility of at least a further extension of one year for Button, so the Englishman’s many fans will doubtless be delighted to see him remaining at McLaren for the foreseeable future. Button himself has declared that the prospect of his 16th F1 season has left him ‘absolutely raring to go’, so it’ll definitely be interesting to follow his fortunes over the course of next year.

If you’re an avid fan of F1, you’ll know that the uncertainty over Button’s future occurred after McLaren signed double world champion Fernando Alonso some weeks ago. The appeal of Alonso’s driving skills is obvious, but nevertheless this development left Button fighting for his career alongside 2014 team-mate Kevin Magnussen. The young Dane, just 22 years of age, was widely expected to displace 2009 champion Button, but the latter’s strong late-season charge appeared to be enough to secure his future. Magnussen remains both a test and reserve driver for Mclaren, and the automotive giant has lain down an early challenge for the 2015 season by stating that ‘we now have by an order of magnitude the best driver line-up of any current Formula 1 team’.

The promise of McLaren’s new line-up is indeed great, but, given the dominance of Mercedes in 2014, you’d have to be very brave to back Button or Alonso for the 2015 driver’s championship. Although it’s great to see Button remaining in McLaren, many were speculating whether the uncertainty over his position could lead him to take another pathway. Former F1 stalwart Mark Webber had been vocal about his desire to see Button in the world of endurance racing, whilst an involvement in the quickly growing sport of Formula E was also mentioned. Given the fact that Button is an ambassador for TAG Heuer – one of the primary backing bodies in Formula E– such a change would make sense, and perhaps we may see it playing out at some point in the future.

Of course, Button’s status within the world of TAG Heuer was never in doubt, and he’ll continue to be an integral part of the campaign from this celebrated Swiss watchmaker. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 and TAG Heuer Carrera ranges are pinpointed as being most representative of Button’s exemplary qualities, and here at Banks Lyon Jewellers we’re proud to possess plenty of examples from each collection in our unparalleled stock.
