The Masters 2015 – Omega’s McIlroy Puts Grand Slam Ambitions on Hold

The golfing world has been looking forward to the Masters for quite some time, not only due to the annual appeal that this event commands, but also as a result of the historical significance of the 2015 tournament. If you’re a golf aficionado, you’ll know that this year’s tournament represented Rory McIIroy’s first opportunity to capture the career Grand Slam. Already a winner of the PGA and the US Open, McIlroy – the world number one – went into the Masters with heavy expectation, knowing that victory would position him among the youngest ever winners of Golf’s Grand Slam.

So, how did he do? Well, our title is a bit of a giveaway, as the Omega ambassador will have to put his ambitions on hold for another year, losing out on the 2015 title to 21-year-old Jordan Spieth. In actual fact, the American equalled the record lowest winning score in the history of the Masters (18 under) to win his maiden major title, leaving Rory McIlroy to finish fourth, with a score of 12 under. Whilst not a bad result by any means, McIlroy’s 2015 Masters challenge – his best ever to date – was stymied by a sluggish start, meaning that he never recovered to seriously threaten Spieth, whose inspired form was such that he never looked like relinquishing his grip on the Green Jacket.

Obviously, whilst this result is highly intriguing for golf, setting up the prospect of a future long-lasting rivalry between Spieth and McIlroy, it’s perhaps slightly disappointing for those wishing to see history made by the Northern Irishman. Nevertheless, 25-year-old McIlroy will be contending for years to come, and you wouldn’t bet against the missing piece in his Grand Slam puzzle slotting into place at sometime in the next few years. It’s likely that watch brand Omega will be with him during every step of his quest too, as – even with Spieth’s marvellous breakthrough at the Masters – no other player has truly set the world of golf alight since the heyday of the now-ailing Tiger Woods.

With all that being said, and given Omega’s fascination with golf, it’s also likely that we’ll carry on seeing a fair few golfing wristwatches over the next few years too, and you’ll continue to be able to view all of the latest releases – and also the current stars – right here at Banks Lyon Jewellers. In the build-up to the Masters, we showcased the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Master 150mm, as, whilst it may not be an obviously golf-themed timepiece, it does happen to be the favoured watch of Rory McIlroy himself, and we still have this wristwatch in stock, alongside a great many others as well.

Priced at £3,800, or available on finance for 36 monthly payments of £84.44 and a 20% deposit, this chronometer numbers among Omega’s finest, and don’t forget that you can also visit our Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra page to view some of our other golf-associated wristwatches. Additionally, if you’d like some assistance with your choice of timepiece, don’t hesitate to contact us by calling 01524 38 48 58. We’ll be happy to answer your query or provide you with further information.
