Up-Close With the Bremont Martin Baker III

In light of our feature on the Bremont Supermarine GMT Terra Nova watch, we thought that it was prudent to remember that this high-performance chronometer was far from the only jewel within the Bremont Baselworld 2014 campaign, and it must be emphasised that even the breathtaking engineering of this wristwatch is merely a standard trademark of the Bremont portfolio, rather than an exception to the rule. In fact, the Terra Nova shared the limelight with the Martin Baker III, a timepiece that we’ve previously showcased on our blog, and it’s fair to say that these two standout chronometers surrender little to each other in terms of technical prowess.

Although the Terra Nova may hold the edge within environments that are fiercely cold, it would be extremely unwise to dismiss the challenge of the Martin Baker III, as this timepiece is constructed to meet a bewildering array of challenges that can be encountered within the aviation industry, and it must also prove its durability within the cauldron of a live ejection test. We went into some detail about these tests last time, but, needless to say, meeting the standards of British aviation icon Martin Baker is hardly run-of-the-mill.  However, the Martin Baker III is finely engineered in other respects too, as it possesses many of Bremont’s signature augmentations.

The Roto-Click® bezel is the first of these features, and this in-house developed technology has found a home upon several other Bremont watches aside from the Martin Baker family. Four internal ball bearings allow the bezel to rotate efficiently with an unprecedentedly smooth action, and the conjunction of the bearings and the gearing gives rise to a satisfying ‘click’ whenever the bezel rotates beyond a minute. Additionally, a Bremont Anti-Shock movement – originally developed especially for the pioneering Martin Baker timepiece – is present to absorb all excessive impact. This is enabled by the use of a rubber-coated movement mount and a flexible connective ring; a design consideration that ‘suspends’ the inner case and movement, thus assuaging the effect of shock.

Given the advent of the Omega Master Co-Axial movement, anti-magnetic capabilities are very much at the forefront of modern day horological thinking, and so the Martin Baker III is also equipped with a Faraday cage to combat the potential damage that magnetic fields can inflict on delicate mechanical movements. A marvellous piece of design that can even be implemented within a very small space, the Faraday cage is made from soft-iron, and by encasing the movement it deflects any magnetic fields around the mechanism in question. In fact, with a hardened stainless steel case, a chronometer certification and a 100 metre water resistance, there is very little that the Martin Baker III isn’t able to contend with.

Of course, the Martin Baker III is far more than just a precision timekeeping instrument for the most extreme of environments. It ushers a brand new never-seen bronze colouration into the distinguished portfolio of Bremont watches, a freshly reinvented case design, and – along with the Terra Nova – it represents the first time that this British watchmaker has ever embraced the use of non-chronograph 24 hour GMT technology. Clearly then, the popularity of this watch within the worlds of both military and civilian aviators is entirely justified, and it really is a superb introduction to an already imposing family of chronometers.

Here at Banks Lyon Jewellers, the Bremont Martin Baker III watch is available in 3 distinct barrel colourations for £3,945.
