The Calibre de Cartier is a modern masterpiece of aesthetics and mechanics, featuring an unusual sporty design and a brand new Cartier self-winding movement, the 1904 MC. It is quite different from the classic designs that the brand has become famous for, but it still retains the elegant and luxurious qualities associated with Cartier. The most striking aspect of Calibre de Cartier watches are the powerful, masculine lines, with a robust round case measuring 42mm in diameter, but the watch itself does no look or feel huge, suggesting a break away from the recent trend for oversized watches. Curved horns set into the cylindrical case middle for as visual impact and added comfort on the wrist. The bezel is also particularly noteworthy, its smooth polished exterior contrasting with the notched fluted ring, providing an attractive frame for the dial.

The dial is dominated by the rather large ‘VII’ which features a subtle relief and is contrasted by the small seconds sub-dial located at 6 o’clock, which is equally huge. These strong features are contrasted by subtle arcs of grained and snailed finishes set around the Roman numerals and the calendar function at the 3 o’clock marker. The case back is transparent, allowing for a good view of the 1904 MC calibre movement.
