Inspired by the Renault tanks that Louis Cartier saw when visiting the Western Front, Cartier Tank and Cartier Tank Francaise watches have become a hallmark of the brand. Created in 1917 and released in 1919 as a tribute to the Allied forces, their structure emulates a tank, and they have proven to be durable and hardy timepieces. The bracelets in particular have been designed to look like tank treads, especially in modern models. This attention to detail and history marks out the Cartier Tank as highly collectible as well as very wearable, and with over 250 variations of the Tank that have been released since its conception means the buyer has a great deal of choice in their timepiece.
Cartier Tank Francaise watches, created in 1996, are rather distinctive looking, with square or rectangular faces depending on the collection, and blue, sword-shaped steel hands matching the familiar blue of the sapphire cabochons tipping the winding crown. Unusually, the Roman numerals circle round the face, making the 6 o’clock marker seem upside-down in relation to the 12 o’clock marker. This produces an interesting effect when combined with the square and rectangular face, making the timepiece particularly unique.
Cartier Tank and Cartier Tank Francaise watches are available in manual, automatic and quartz movements, and depending on the model are available in steel, yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold, and can be set with sapphires or diamonds. Versatile, durable and luxurious, Cartier Tank and Cartier Tank Francaise watches are the epitome of the brand.
