If you are looking for an iconic piece of watch making history, then the best place to start is with the Santos de Cartier. The Cartier Santos legend is famous among watch enthusiasts and historians alike. The model was originally commissioned by Albert Santos Dumont, an aviator who was not happy with using his pocket watch during flight, as it was at best uncomfortable and at worst incredibly dangerous. He complained to Louis Cartier, a friend of his, and Cartier produced the world’s first true wristwatch, the Santos de Cartier, in 1904.
The timepiece’s large dial and Roman numerals ensure easy readability, which is crucial when in flight. The watch became famous after Santos’ celebrated flight around the Eiffel Tower, after which he paused to check the time, catching the eyes of hundreds of Parisians who looked on admiringly. As a result, many people wanted a Santos de Cartier of their own, but Cartier had already promised Santos that his watch would be exclusive, and so did not expand the line until much later.
In addition to the other features, the timepiece has a large square bezel and case with attractive rounded edges, which included the pioneering incorporated lugs without attachments or pins. The case was devised as a single piece, which in combination with the other features meant that the design was more practical than a pocket watch and more secure than a watch that relied on pins to hold the strap and case together. The Santos de Cartier is a watch that perfectly partners practicality and luxury.
