Alpina Reveals New Startimer Pilot Big Date Professional

It’s been a little while since we’ve had much news to report on the Alpina front, but this horological brand – one of our recent introductions – has not been idle. As well as introducing a brand new Comtesse collection for ladies, their latest headline heralds the arrival of another member of the Alpina Startimer collection. During the time that we’ve been stocking Alpina timepieces, we’ve noticed that the pilot-themed Startimer range is undoubtedly one of the most popular assemblages to be produced by Alpina, so this new arrival almost seems destined to attract a lot of attention.

One of the greatest successes behind the Alpina Startimer has always been the inclusion of a very readable dial, and that’s a pattern that has definitely been upheld in this version. However, the contrasting silver sub-dials on the wristwatch haven’t just been selected for their visibility, but have also been inspired by pilot dials from the 1970s Alpina range, so the brand has clearly been very aware of their heritage when they were constructing this latest timepiece. For the same reason, Alpina’s signature triangle logo is placed in a very apparent position, and this, coupled with the deep blue of the sunray finished dial, complements the military-style strap in a very pleasing fashion.

Actually, there are two variants of this new Startimer, as both a standard model and a chronograph adaptation are being released simultaneously. Regardless of your chosen timepiece though, the capabilities are impressive, with scratch-proof sapphire crystal, anti-reflective coating, a screwed- in crown and a robust water resistance all being provided. As you’ll have gathered from the title bestowed upon this wristwatch, the date aperture is also greatly enlarged, and takes a rather different route to the norm by being situated at the 6 o’clock position. The end result is undeniably worth it though, and the fact that this aperture lies within the circumference of one of the sub-dials also gives the face of this Startimer an aesthetic that’s as uncluttered as possible.

Although Alpina possesses a rich heritage, they have also built up a steady reputation for the accessibility of their watches, and this is furthered by the selected movement within the Startimer Big Date. A precision Swiss quartz movement in either case (although chronograph complications are naturally present within the foremost release), this mechanism has been developed to deliver the high standards of performance that you might expect from a professional aviation wristwatch, yet is also equipped for the everyday world, which prioritises convenience above most other virtues.

As Alpina continues to expand their horological portfolio, don’t forget that the vast back catalogue of existing Alpina watches also contains a colossal number of fine timepieces. This is, after all, a long-standing watch manufacturer with a varied history, and no matter whether their watches are equipped to excel in the air, on land or at sea, they consistently combine excellence with a highly affordable price tag.
