The Heritage of Breitling Top Time Watches
Before we look at what’s new, let’s remind ourselves of the origins of Top Time, and why it is a collection worth getting excited about (at least in my expert opinion).
The original Breitling Top Time was launched in 1964, designed by Willy Breitling to appeal to a younger generation seeking a modern, sporty chronograph. With its sleek design and accessible price point, the first Top Time was a watch that both men and women could enjoy, offering both style and performance in equal measure.
Of course, one of the most iconic moments in Top Time history came in 1965 when it appeared on the wrist of James Bond in Thunderball. Watching Sean Connery’s Bond use a specially modified Top Time, complete with a built-in Geiger counter, only adds to the watch’s enduring appeal, especially for fans like myself.
Since then, Breitling has expanded the collection with lots of different exciting variations, including the distinctive ‘Zorro’ and ‘Racing’ dials, featuring two or three sub-dials for a bold, dynamic aesthetic.

Reimagining the Top Time
One thing I admire about Breitling is their ability to take an iconic, older watch model and transform it into something relevant, sophisticated, and practical. I think the new Top Time B31 range does just that.
An intriguing feature about this new collection is the introduction of Breitling’s 3-hand automatic manufacture calibre, which is seen for the very first time in this range. As leaders in manufacturing some of the world’s most reliable and precise movements, I’m interested to see how this new complication will differ to other Breitling options.
Catering to a wide range of design and comfortability preferences, the Top Time watches come in both perforated calfskin leather straps and 3-row bracelets. The dials and leather straps also come in several shade variations which overall adhere to a neutral, earth-toned colour palette, for that classic look that will never go out of style. Keen eyes will note that the leather strap option references the material of vintage racing gloves, continuing the theme of subtle historic inclusions.
As a unisex watch, the Top Time B31 features a 38mm watch face, working well with both masculine and feminine styles, without looking too overpowering on the wrist. This case size is reminiscent of previous Top Time watches, blending vintage proportions with contemporary style and construction. For those that are interested in the internal makeup of their timepieces, this watch includes an open case back – perfect for avid watch enthusiasts.
Breitling have partnered with actor Austin Butler on their new Top Time campaign, helping to engage fans of Butler’s work, and continuing their tradition of working with leading figures in the world of film.

The Top Time B31: Variation Breakdown
Now that we’ve covered the collection’s legacy and how it’s been reimagined for 2025, let’s discuss the different models available:
- Royal Blue Elegance: As a deviation from the traditional neutral-toned watch dials, this royal blue option is the perfect way to inject some colour into your everyday wear, with a muted blue leather strap or stainless steel bracelet to accompany it.
- Dark Green Sophistication: A slightly darker, more evening-appropriate choice, this dark green watch face incorporates a black bezel for a refined look. This variation is also available with a stainless steel bracelet or a deep green leather strap.Â
- White and Sky Blue Contrast: For a two-toned option, this watch face features a central white colour and a sky blue bezel, working as an excellent choice for both men and women. Choose from a stainless steel bracelet or vintage-inspired brown leather strap, to get that classic timepiece appearance.Â
Each of these watches are water resistant up to 100m and feature a self-winding automatic movement. Their combination of traditional design and impeccable watchmaking enables them to be the perfect addition to any watch enthusiast’s collection.
