Motorsport is almost symbiotically entwined with the world of TAG Heuer, and this is one of the longest and most valued partnerships that has been forged by this prestigious watch brand. Within this alliance, though, are several smaller collaborations that are perhaps especially close to TAG Heuer’s heart, and their association with McLaren is undoubtedly one such jewel in their crown.
For as long as the history of horology and Formula 1 has been ongoing, there has never been a more enduring union between a watchmaker and a motorsport team, and one of the particular highlights in this shared story was the opportunity to work alongside Ayrton Senna. One of the most revered drivers ever to take to the wheel of a Formula 1 car, Senna’s memory still lives on in TAG Heuer’s campaign #DontCrackUnderPressure, and, as a McLaren driver himself, he’s obviously inextricably linked with the McLaren anniversary, and this fact is at the forefront of TAG Heuer’s celebrations.
Senna’s talent and determination mirrors the values of the current McLaren pairing – Fernando Alonso and TAG Heuer ambassador Jenson Button – and it certainly echoes the philosophy of the TAG Heuer brand itself. Already, TAG Heuer are wondering whether – just like in the days of Senna – this year’s McLaren team might prove to be a winning one, and their enthusiasm for this cause is clearly evident in the two associated Carrera wristwatches that they’re releasing.
The Carrera Calibre 1887 is the watch in question, and it’s not just mainstream issue watches that are being created either, as a limited edition Carrera is set to be displayed at one upcoming Formula 1 event. With a red and black colour scheme that mimics some of the aesthetics of the Formula 1 giants of yore, all of the elements are in place to ensure that the 30th anniversary celebrations are a resounding success. However, that’s not all, as this year is also heralding TAG Heuer’s long awaited return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans; one the of the most punishing endurance races on the planet.
Operating alongside Nissan, TAG Heuer will be arrayed against the significant alliance of Chopard and Porsche – one of the most successful teams in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans – so there will doubtless be some thrilling stories to tell along the way! Of course, we’re perhaps most interested in what these ventures will bring forth in terms of new watches, particularly the Carrera collection, which is TAG Heuer’s flagship name, and is an assemblage that draws heavily on motorsport for inspiration.
Whilst it’s exciting to wait for new timepieces, don’t forget that you can view a vast assortment of existing TAG Heuer Carrera watches – including those in the 1887 calibre bracket – right now on our website.
