The Omega Bullhead: An Inspired Redesign of a Classic Timepiece

With the excitement of Baselworld now in full swing, and a veritable multitude of new timepieces to peruse, there is still time to look back upon an established watch that we are very proud to now have in stock. Back in 1969, Omega made horological history with the release of the Seamaster ‘Bullhead’; an instantly memorable watch that was forever etched into the pantheon of great watch designs because of its distinctive asymmetrical shape. Although, at the time, some connoisseurs objected to the elements within the Bullhead that went against the ‘classic’ watch form, notably because of the two chronograph buttons that mirror a bull’s horns, the watch was soon to earn undying popularity in the years following its release.

The original Bullhead is one of the most venerated and sought-after ‘vintage’ watches on the market, and the appeal that this watch commands led Omega to finally reinvent this iconic wristwatch late last year. It was the Bullhead’s shield-shaped case, interior rotating bezel and crown detailing that rendered it so unforgettable, and this fresh reincarnation from Omega retains all of those intrinsic qualities, whilst also imbuing it with something new as well. The chronograph pushers have been flattened on the new Bullhead, and a complete overhaul has also been conducted within the watch’s brushed and polished 43 mm casing. When the original Bullhead was at large, Omega had yet to develop their Co-Axial escapement, but many years on this modern innovation has now been utilised within this updated variant.

In stark contrast to the hand-wound calibre 930 that was found in the 1969 Bullhead, the new Omega Bullhead Co-Axial chronograph houses an automatic movement for greater convenience, and it also makes use of a column-wheel chronograph mechanism. This is an admirable nod to the ‘retro’ nature of the Bullhead, and this relatively traditional piece of engineering coordinates the internal components just as effectively as many of its modern successors. Comprehensive functions relating to hours, minutes, seconds, date and chronograph are all offered by the movement, so the new Bullhead is a timepiece for any eventuality. Because of the Co-Axial escapement, the Bullhead now benefits from a full 4 year international manufacturer’s guarantee, and also a water resistance of 150 metres, so its longevity and durability are certainly anything but dated.

However, the most important consideration for Omega was undeniably to capture the essence of the legendary Bullhead, and few would argue that the reimagining has tampered with this aesthetic. The inner bezel is bi-directional and coloured in a crisp white, echoing the dial, and a 24 hour scale in black, red and blue provides an ideal measure of embellishment. The sleek and sophisticated visuals of the bold case also look especially stunning when situated on the brown calf leather strap. This is an unashamedly bold timepiece, yet the Bullhead was never intended to conform to the masses, and was instead fully intended to represent a ground breaking statement piece. With this recent re-release, Omega has unquestionably upheld that legacy to perfection.

Here at Banks Lyon, we are delighted to add the Omega Bullhead Co-Axial Chronograph to our collection, but this unique timepiece is only available in very limited numbers. Retailing at 36 monthly payments of £134.89 alongside a 20% deposit – and with other 0% finance options on offer – this timepiece exudes strength of character, and only 669 pieces are in production.
