Founded in 1884 in Switzerland, Breitling launched the Navitimer in 1952 following the addition of a circular slide rule to the bezel of their chronograph models for aircraft pilots – which became a distinctive feature of the Navitimer range. This bezel isn’t just for show and is used by pilots to assist with in-flight speed, fuel consumption, climb and descent rate calculations.

The Navitimer gets its name from fusing the two words that best describe its primary functions: navigation and timer. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association offered AOPA branded Navitimer watches during the 1950s and ’60s. Breitling was approached by Mercury Space Programme astronaut Scott Carpenter in 1961, who suggested adding a 24-hour dial as opposed to a 12-hour one.

This was intended to aid astronauts during space travel, which lacks a day and night cycle. Breitling designed a Navitimer watch that honoured Carpenter’s request, and it was worn by the astronaut on his space flight in 1962 before later being commercially produced.
