IWC Portugieser watches are legendary within the world of ocular horology and have set extremely high standards right from the beginning. The Portugieser came about in the 1930s after a pair of Portuguese businessmen requested a precise marine chronometer from IWC, which led to the Savonnette pocket watch calibre 74 (and sometimes 98) being housed within the case of a wristwatch.
This development resulted in an unusually sizable watch for the time, and it is no exaggeration to say that this helped to popularise the move towards larger wristwatches that is still evident today. The larger movement also led to the first Portugieser being far more accurate than other options at the time. After a limited edition run, IWC brought the Portugieser into regular circulation in 1993, and the collection has now become a mainstay. The IWC Portugieser Chronograph is just one highly sought-after watch line within the family. Just as important is the IWC Portugieser perpetual calendar functionality.
The Portugieser automatic family has exhibited some of the most complex innovations within the watchmaking world, including a tourbillon movement and a celestial chart. This latter feature appears on the Sidérale Sacfusia, the most complicated watch ever created by IWC, and displays the night sky over a specific location, showcasing up to 1,000 visible stars. Other timepieces like the IWC Perpetual Calendar watch make use of related complexities, though, with moon phase and annual calendar indicators all included on the dial. Annual calendars are especially sought after by connoisseurs, as they need only be adjusted once per year. The Yacht Club chronographs are also especially popular, as they represent a sportier facet of this esteemed collection, even exhibiting a flyback function.
The large dial that resulted in IWC Portugieser watches being so ahead of its time in the 1930s is still a significant style icon to many, with Arabic numerals, a railway-track style chapter ring (known as a “chemin-de-fer”) and slim hands all on display. The chemin-de-fer is divided into one-minute sections, so it also serves as a functional aid, assisting the user to easily identify the time. Many IWC Portugieser automatic watches are finished using traditional black alligator straps to reinforce their timeless aesthetic, with fastenings that mirror the appearance of the luxurious case material.

One of the standout features of the IWC Portugieser watch is its sophisticated chronograph function, allowing you to precisely time events down to the second. Whether you’re timing a single event or adding multiple intervals together, the chronograph is both easy to use and highly functional. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it:
The chronograph function is not only a practical tool but also a hallmark of IWC’s commitment to precision engineering, making the Portugieser a timeless choice for those who appreciate both style and functionality. This feature is one of the many reasons that the IWC Portugieser collection remains so highly esteemed. Embracing traditional watchmaking craftsmanship, the Portugieser appeals to discerning collectors who value both heritage and precision. With its renowned durability and sophisticated aesthetics, the IWC Portugieser stands out as the perfect choice for those seeking a versatile and reliable luxury watch that truly does it all.
Setting the time on your IWC Portugieser is a straightforward process. Here is a step-by-step guide:
Remember to always adjust the time with the crown in position 0 to avoid damaging the mechanism. Your IWC Portugieser watch boasts a power reserve of approximately 44 hours when fully wound. This means that after winding your watch, it will continue to operate accurately for around 44 hours before requiring a recharge. For optimal performance, ensure you wind the watch thoroughly when necessary.
IWC watches come with a 2-year international warranty covering manufacturing defects. By registering your watch through the My IWC program, you can extend the warranty by an additional 6 years, providing a total of 8 years of coverage.
If your IWC watch requires service during your warranty period, you can bring or send it in its original labelled box to either of our stores. Please note that you may be responsible for transportation costs, including postage, insurance, and packing materials. For added peace of mind, we recommend using certified delivery and insurance when sending your watch.
To ensure your service request is processed under the international limited warranty, your watch must be accompanied by the original warranty card or certificate. We will need to update this card, as only official IWC stockists are permitted to complete this warranty documentation.
The International Limited Warranty does not cover defects or damages caused by external factors such as loss, theft, natural disasters, or accidents. It also excludes damages resulting from misuse, negligence, or improper use, including knocks, dents, or alterations to the watch’s functionality. Additionally, services or repairs carried out by non-authorised parties, as well as the use of non-recommended components, void the warranty. Normal wear and tear, as well as watches with altered or illegible serial numbers, are also not covered. Finally, the warranty does not cover routine maintenance or minor inaccuracies that fall within industry tolerance.
