When shopping online in the UK, consumers are granted enhanced rights under UK law, ensuring greater protection than when purchasing in a high street store. These rights are governed by regulations established in 2000 and amended in 2005, specifically designed to safeguard online transactions.

Key Consumer Rights When Shopping Online in the UK:

1. Right to Information: Retailers must provide clear and comprehensive information about the goods or services being offered before the purchase is made. This includes details such as the price (inclusive of all taxes), delivery charges, and the identity of the retailer.

2. Right to Cancel: Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, you have the right to cancel most online purchases within 14 days of receiving the goods without needing to provide a reason. This "cooling-off" period gives you the chance to change your mind and receive a full refund, including standard delivery costs.

3. Refunds and Returns: If the goods you receive are faulty, not as described, or do not fit for purpose, you are entitled to a full refund or replacement. The retailer must bear the cost of returning faulty or misrepresented items.

4. Delivery of Goods: Retailers are obliged to deliver goods within the time frame agreed upon at the time of purchase. If no time frame is provided, delivery must occur within 30 days. If the retailer fails to deliver within this period, you are entitled to a refund.

5. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act: When using a credit card to purchase goods or services online costing between £100 and £30,000, you are protected by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This law makes the credit card company jointly liable if the goods are faulty, not delivered, or misrepresented.

6. Safe and Secure Shopping: UK retailers are required to take steps to ensure that their websites are safe and secure for consumers. This includes protecting your personal and payment information against fraud and unauthorised access.

By being aware of these rights, you can shop online with greater confidence, knowing that UK law provides robust protection against common issues like non-delivery, faulty goods, or misleading information.
