A Very Royal Engagement

Monday 27th November 2017 marked the day the announcement of a new Royal engagement was made. While the announcement did not come as a surprise, it has still been big news and has had everyone talking about the young couple and their upcoming nuptials.

At Banks Lyon, what we were particularly excited to see was the ring! The bride-to-be’s engagement ring has caused quite a stir, as the royal jeweller behind the design has stated that they will not be making replicas.

The Ring

The stunning diamond engagement ring was commissioned by Prince Harry and is particularly special for the couple, with each diamond holding sentimental value for the prince and his soon-to-be wife. At its centre sits an impressive diamond, sourced from Botswana, a country which holds a special place in Harry’s heart, and the location of the royal couple’s third date.

On either side of the breath-taking centre diamond are two equally beautiful stones selected from the personal jewellery collection of Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana.

In a recent interview, the couple spoke about what it meant to include these stones in the engagement ring. Prince Harry stated his reasons for his choice – “to make sure she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”

While there was some speculation that Prince Harry may have chosen to use the emeralds from one of his mother’s pieces, he ultimately opted for this fabulous design.

Royal Engagement Rings

Meghan’s spectacular engagement ring is certainly not the first royal engagement ring to capture the imagination of the public.

When the engagement of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer was announced in February 1981, the famous sapphire engagement ring was revealed to the world. This ring was rather unusual for a royal engagement as it was chosen by Diana from a jewellery collection available to the public, meaning it was certainly not unique, like the ring designed by her son, Harry.  The elegant ring features a 12-carat oval blue sapphire which is surrounded by fourteen solitaire diamonds.

When Diana died in 1997, her two sons were given the opportunity to choose an item from her jewellery collection to keep as a memento. While Prince William chose her Cartier watch, Prince Harry selected her iconic engagement ring.

However, when the time came for William to propose to his bride, Harry willingly gave his brother their mother’s ring to present to Kate.

A Bespoke Engagement

There is something incredibly special about a bespoke piece of jewellery, especially a bespoke engagement ring. The thought that went into Meghan Markle’s engagement ring brings added sentimental value to the piece.

However, creating bespoke jewellery does not just have to be for royalty. At Banks Lyon, we offer a bespoke jewellery design service, allowing you to create something truly special for your loved one. Just as Prince Harry chose stones to be featured in the ring, we can take stones from an existing piece, either redesigning it or creating a brand-new item with it.

Alternatively, with your input, we can create something completely new and unique, making it the perfect engagement ring.
