Breitling Introduce the Exospace B55 Connected Watch

BanksLyon

In the first part of our 2015 review, we talked about the rise of the smartwatch, and the steps that the Swiss watchmaking industry has made to address this new consumer demand. One of the latest entries into this part of the market is the Breitling Exospace B55 Connected watch, which hit the market just prior to Christmas.

Breitling first announced that they would be venturing into the wearables arena back in March at Baselworld, and now that has become a reality. Unlike other smartwatches, this has a very distinct target market – like many of Breitling’s timepieces, it is designed with a range of functions specifically for pilots, such as flight times and a mission countdown/up function.

The Exospace B55 uses Bluetooth LE to connect to a smartphone, with the accompanying app available on both Android and iPhone – one advantage it offers over the TAG Heuer Connected watch, which only connects to Android. This provides a selection of functions such as alarms, phone call notifications to your watch, and a second timezone. In addition, there are a range of chronograph functions.

The Exospace B55 uses Breitling’s SuperQuartz movement, with both digital and analogue displays to provide clarity in all its functions. The LCD displays have backlighting which can be activated manually with the watch’s crown, or simply by tilting the watch towards you at a 35° angle.

Rather than using a micro-USB port or similar for recharging the Li-on battery, there is a magnetic connector at the side of the watch, keeping the watch practical and classic in appearance.

Unlike the TAG Heuer Connected watch, which was a collaboration between Swiss watchmakers and American technological innovators, the Breitling Exospace B55 watch is entirely Swiss-made. Breitling have always defended the tradition and innovation of the “Swiss Made” label, so this was an important point for them. The entire timepiece was developed, assembled, finished and tested in Switzerland, including the smartphone application.

The timepiece features a 46mm black titanium case with a unidirectional ratcheted bezel and sapphire crystal, glareproofed on both sides to ensure optimum visibility under all conditions. It also offers water resistance, rated up to 100m (330ft), which will be a comfort for those using it under the kind of adventurous conditions it’s intended to enhance.

It comes with a Twinpro rubber strap as standard, with three choices of colour (blue, metallic grey or anthracite on black) providing an excellent balance of style and comfort.

This is certainly an exceptional timepiece, although the specificity of the smart functions may limit its appeal beyond the flying community. Of course, for those who remain unconvinced of the necessity of a connected watch, there is an extensive range of more conventional Breitling watches to choose from. Here at Banks Lyon, we have an extensive range in our store, and will be more than happy to advise you on your choice.
