IWC Portofino Watches: Elegant and Timeless

The IWC Portofino collection is among IWC’s most successful. Inspired by the Mediterranean lifestyle, IWC Portofino watches are sophisticated, stylish and functional, and their signature uncluttered dials are classically elegant and timeless.

We offer many Portofino watches at Banks Lyon, as we’re official stockists for IWC, so you can find a great variety of these timepieces at our stores. Take a look below at what makes this collection so sought-after and why you should consider getting a Portofino yourself.

History of the IWC Portofino Range

The name ‘Portofino’ comes from an Italian fishing village famous among celebrities and historically associated with the arts. The Portofino collection captures the essence of a laidback life on the Mediterranean coast, celebrating the small village while offering glamour and elegance in every watch.

The Portofino collection launched in 1984 and, since then, its aesthetic stayed faithful to the original models while still being updated with modern specifications and designs that remain popular to this day.

With this family of watches, IWC resumed its tradition of classic, functional round cases. The watchmaker also introduced several technical innovations in the collection, such as the introduction of the Calibre 630, a hybrid chronograph movement, in 1988. In 1993, IWC created its slimmest model yet, the Hand-Wound Portofino and, in 1995, the brand also launched the Romana, one of the thinnest wristwatches in the world at the time and which came with a perpetual calendar.

Over the years, IWC changed case sizes and added a few complications, but the spirit of the collection continues to be one of subtle elegance and precise functionality.

What Makes IWC Portofino Watches So Special?

There are many reasons why the Portofino is one of IWC’s signature collections.

The range is varied and appeals to many different watch enthusiasts. There is something for everyone among the classic models with understated designs, be it the type of bracelet, the colour of the dial, the complications or the materials.

While the collection used to only have large case sizes, IWC chose to create iterations for smaller wrists as well – the smaller cases are no different than the larger, as their dials come with the same signature features and flourishes.

The Portofino is meant to be a wristwatch in ‘pocket watch style’, and appeal to both ladies and gents with its unisex, minimalist design. The watches have baton indexes or Roman numerals and simple hour markers, as well as a large number of features, like moon phase displays, power reserve of 8 days or GMT functions.
