First introduced in 1970, the Omega Seamaster 600 watch or “Ploprof” (derived from the French phrase plongeurs professionnels, meaning professional divers) was designed to withstand the pressures of the deep ocean, experienced by professional deep sea divers. This Seamaster was described as one of the most “robust and seaworthy divers’ wristwatches ever manufactured”.

In 2009 Omega is re-launching an updated version of the Ploprof, the Omega Ploprof 1200m Co-Axial Calibre 8500 Watch. As the name suggests, this watch has a water resistance of an amazing 1200m, and combines the classic design and function of the 70’s model, with the state-of-the-art Co-Axial technology. The watch has a self-winding bi-directional movement and a power reserve of 60 hours, just what professional divers need, 1200m below the surface.

The Omega Ploprof 1200m watch, has distinctive features that make it unique from any other watch, with the overall design of the watch being dictated by two principle features. First, the screwed in crown in positioned at 9 o’clock under a protective buffer, (which is a segment of the case that separates from the main body of the watch as the crown is released) preventing accidental manipulation and freer wrist movement.  Second, the Bezel lock release button at the external 2 o’clock position, which prevents the accidental alteration of the bezel during use.  This feature is designed to be usable even whilst diving and is essential for the accurate monitoring of remaining time of the divers oxygen reserves.  The bracelet of this watch is available in a reassuringly weighty stainless steel brushed mesh “sharkproof” bracelet or on a black or orange rubber strap. It has a divers safety clasp which allows for adjustments in up to 18 positions and a gas escape value for pressure acclimatization. The “on your wrist, on your wet suit” feature includes a 26mm extension to be comfortably worn over a diving suit.

This Omega Seamaster watch Calibre 8500, due for release in October 2009, defines the future of watch making, combining style with professionalism. It is a watch which people are already getting excited about, bearing a resemblance to its famous ancestor, carrying on the traditions of the watches robust reliability.
