TAG Heuer launches the Carrera 1887 SpaceX

To celebrate both the 50th Anniversary of the first Swiss watchmaker in space and the first successful SpaceX mission into the International Space Station, TAG Heuer has produced a stunning commemorative watch, The Limited Edition TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph.

In February 1962,  US Astronaut John Glenn piloted the Friendship 7 spacecraft into outer space, where it orbited the earth three times. This was the first time that NASA had achieved this feat and it was a key milestone in the race to the Moon that reached its climax in 1969. To provide a back up to the equipment in the spacecraft, John Glenn had a TAG Heuer 2915A Stopwatch strapped to his arm, with a makeshift band made by NASA. This gave TAG Heuer watches the honour of being the first Swiss timepieces in Space.

Just as SpaceX carries forward the legacy of Project Mercury, the 2012 TAG Heuer Carrera SpaceX draws on the spirit of John Glenns Heuer stopwatch to create a thoroughly contemporary and elegant timepiece. The iconic Carrera case design is reinterpreted for 2012 with a new, larger 43mm stainless steel case featuring finely polished surfaces, including the bezel, crown and Chronograph pushers.

The unique Silver dial faithfully reproduces the design of the Heuer 2915A, with triangle-markers at both 12 and 6 o’clock and printed Arabic numerals that share the same font as the stopwatch worn by John Glenn. Similarly, the shape of the central Chronograph hand echos the design of the original.

Bringing together the past and the future of space travel is the graphic at the 3 o’clock register and, below that, an image of the SpaceX Falcon 9 second stage and Dragon spacecraft in low Earth orbit. On the opposite side of the dial is the TAG HEUER logo and the lettering ‘First Swiss Watch in Space’.

Perfectly complementing the unique design of the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX, is a bespoke distressed brown leather rally strap that evokes the vintage feel of the 1960s.

Manufacture Movement

Powering this special edition Carrera is TAG Heuers in-house Calibre 1887 movement, an advanced Chronograph movement built by TAG Heuers team at its factories in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Cornol in Switzerland.

The workings of the movement are visible through a scratch-resistant, smoked Sapphire case-back with the applied image of the Falcon 9 and Dragon spacecraft, as well as the SpaceX logo.

Tested in Space

When SpaceX made its record-breaking visit to the ISS in May 2012, the capsule took along the Carrera SpaceX Chronograph, marking the 50th anniversary of TAG Heuer being the first Swiss timepiece in space and providing the ultimate test for TAG Heuers manufacture Calibre 1887 movement.

After returning to Earth, the Chronograph underwent a full series of tests to measure its resistance to G-forces experienced during launch, rendezvous with the Space Station, re-entry and landing. With all functions operating normally, the trip to the stars demonstrates the reliability and accuracy of TAG Heuer’s Calibre 1887 movement under the most extreme conditions imaginable.

TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX is a limited edition of 2,012 pieces, each individually numbered and engraved.
