The Breitling Chronomat Airborne: 30 Years of the Chronomat

We briefly touched upon the launch of the brand new Breitling Chronomat Airborne range in our Breitling at Baselworld blog, but such a fleeting glance by no means did justice to this exciting new range. As you’ve undoubtedly observed, the established range of Breitling Chronomat watches celebrates their 30th birthday this year, and the freshly revealed Chronomat Airborne watches are Breitling’s chosen way of honouring this impressive milestone.

The Chronomat range was first born at the bequest of the Italian Frecce Tricolori team – famed as they are for their advanced aerobatics – and so it should come as no surprise to find that the resulting watches (developed by Willy Breitling’s successor, Ernest Schneider) are legendary for their aviation-themed professionalism. At this time, the Breitling Navitimer was renowned as being the flagship for the company brand name, but the introduction of the Chronomat was set to change that recognised order. With its robust case, ergonomically crafted details and eminently readable tri-compax dial, the Chronomat soon became acknowledged as at least the equal of the prestigious Navitimer, and as a pilot’s wristwatch par excellence.

The Chronomat’s status was forever cemented in 2009 when it became the pioneering Breitling watch to house an entirely in-house Caliber movement, and the Chronomat Airborne range undeniably pays generous tribute to the excellence of the horological forefathers in the Chronomat family. In fact, the new Chronomat Airborne models strongly recall the vintage aesthetics of the very first Chronomat that was designed for the Frecce Tricolori, although they also exhibit unique traits that mark them out with a firm sense of individuality as well.

Each timepiece boasts a fully rotating satin brushed bezel (contrasting well with the polished steel of the casing) and, typical of Breitling, this adornment has been optimised to be as easy to use as possible. Four protruding rider tabs have been implemented to allow the bezel to be turned even when the wearer is sporting full gloves, and even flight times can be readily observed in this manner. Likewise, the rubber lined indices on the bezel are completely new for the Chronomat Airborne range, as is the light colouration of the luminous dial indices, and each and every caseback is inscribed with a commemorative engraving that displays an Italian Aermacchi plane.

Two sizes of Chronomat Airborne have been introduced at Baselworld – namely a 41 mm version and a 44 mm variant – and both of these timepieces come with twin choices regarding the hue of the dial. Onyx black and Sierra silver are the two colours in question, and the subdial counters on each conforms to the opposite colouration to ensure superb readability; always a venerated feature of the Chronomat range. The strap of each Chronomat Airborne is formed from specialist fabric that is favoured in military operations and – as you might expect – the automatic movement is a Caliber BR01 that brings with it all the refined precision of a chronometer certified mechanism.

Each Chronomat Airborne watch excels in every feasible respect, as not only is the buyer privy to a remarkably proficient timepiece with a 70 hour power reserve and a water resistance of several hundred metres, but they can also customise elements like the strap to suit their own preferences too. For a timepiece that is both powerful and understated in equal measures, there is little to better this supreme new addition to Breitling’s most popular collection. Here at Banks Lyon, we are proud to have all four deviations of this timepiece in stock – the Breitling Chronomat 41 Airborne watch in Oynx black and Sierra silver, and also the Breitling Chronomat 44 Airborne watch in black and silver – allowing you to claim one of these outstanding watches as your own for 36 monthly payments of £133.33 alongside a 20% deposit.
