The Legendary Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

Omega News & Releases

2019 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and of the moment Buzz Aldrin touched the lunar surface wearing a reliable Omega Speedmaster watch on his spacesuit. In 1965, the Speedmaster gained its official qualification for space flight and, since then, Omega has had a long-lasting relationship with NASA. This legendary collection epitomises the watchmaker’s spirit of adventure, its prestige and its focus on world-class craftsmanship.

To mark such a significant moment in history, Omega has released a few additions to the Speedmaster family. We’ve already discussed the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 11 watch in-depth, limited to only 1,014 pieces worldwide; in this article, we’re now taking a look at the fantastic range of Moonwatch iterations you can find at Banks Lyon.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Collection

The name ‘Speedmaster’ derives from the tachymeter scale bezel on the watches. The Speedmaster Moonwatch, or Speedmaster Professional, boasts several great accomplishments since its creation. Not only the first watch on the moon, this timepiece is also part of the official equipment of NASA’s astronauts for their Extra Vehicular Activities and is the watch used during spacewalks as well.

Heavily linked to the aerospace industry and, more specifically, space, the Speedmaster was first produced in 1957 and immediately gained a reputation for offering stunning precision, being highly reliable and being very easy to use. As the perfect finishing touch, the watch also has a stylish and sophisticated aesthetic that makes it perfect for any occasion, be it a sports event, a night out or a board meeting.

In the collection, you’ll find both analogue-digital and automatic-mechanical models, as well as advanced technology such as Super-LumiNovaTM, which helps divers, pilots and explorers to keep time accurately no matter where they are, be it on land, underwater or space. The models are also capable of withstanding low and high temperatures, low and high pressure, high acoustic noise, intense vibrations and differing levels of humidity.

The pieces in the Speedmaster range have not undergone a massive change since 1957; however, they have been revised with new, innovative features that ensure the collection is up to date. Timeless, yet contemporary, Omega Speedmaster watches are the perfect choice for the modern gent or lady who is passionate about precision, heritage and style.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Models at Banks Lyon

Omega watches are renowned for offering precise technology and world-class functionality to the most demanding of environments, and the Speedmaster is no exception. The Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of Omega’s most iconic lines and each timepiece within it has been designed and manufactured with accurate performance in mind. Below, you can find a selection of some of the best and most sought-after Moonwatch models in the collection.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum Watch

Part of the lunar missions, the eagerly awaited Calibre 321 is making a comeback. The original calibre 321 was the first movement ever used in the Speedmaster in 1957 and is known for its precision and gorgeous, intricate design. After undergoing research and reconstruction, the movement has now been updated for the new Moonwatch pieces. The scratch-resistant sapphire-crystal caseback of the Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum allows you to view the stunning movement.

The chronograph comes with a 42mm brushed and polished case crafted from a special alloy of platinum and gold; its design is inspired by the asymmetrical 4th generation Speedmaster case with twisted lugs. The black ceramic bezel contrasts beautifully with the tachymeter scale in white enamel, adding another layer of sophistication to an already elegant and classy watch.

The step dial is made from onyx, a deep black colour that perfectly harmonises with the other stunning materials of the piece, such as the 18k white gold for the indexes and most of the hands. Another element that makes this watch such a special model is its three meteorite subdials created from real slices of moon meteorite. This tribute is perfect for fans of the collection who wish to own a piece of history as well as a piece of the moon, and adds a further connection to the Calibre 321, which powered all Speedmasters worn on the moon.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum watch is available to order from Banks Lyon for £47,500.

Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph Hesalite Crystal Moon Watch

This striking model comes with a black dial covered by hesalite crystal. Hesalite is a type of acrylic used in the original Speedmaster Moonwatch models. Acrylic offers twice the resistance to fracturing and, should the watch sustain damage, the material will tend to crack instead of shatter; this feature can help to keep the structure of the watch safe. Acrylic is also used in submarine windows, so it’s a highly durable and resistant material.

The model also comes with a small seconds subdial, a 30-minute recorder and a 12-hour recorder along with a central chronograph hand. The black bezel and tachymeter scale are mounted on a 42mm stainless steel case.

The timepiece is powered by the mechanical calibre 1861, a manual-winding movement that was worn on the moon as well. You can choose between stainless steel, NATO and Velcro straps as well, which allows you to personalise the watch according to personal preferences or occasion. This Moonwatch piece also has 50m water resistance.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph Hesalite Crystal Moon watch is available for purchase at Banks Lyon for just £3,810 outright, or spread the cost by taking advantage of 0% finance over terms up to 48 months. This stunning timepiece could be yours for just £63.50 per month when you put down a 20% deposit.

Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph Sapphire Crystal Watch

The black dial features a small seconds dial, 30-minute recorder and 12-hour recorder, as well as a central chronograph hand. The dial is covered by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. This model also comes with a black bezel with tachymeter scale which is mounted on a 42mm stainless steel case with matching bracelet. The fantastic Calibre 1863 was also worn on the moon and is visible through the transparent caseback.

Just like with the previous model, you have the choice of wearing the stainless-steel bracelet or switching it for a NATO or Velcro strap. The watch also has a water resistance of up to 50 metres.

You can purchase the Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph Sapphire Crystal watch for £4,470 when purchased outright. You can spread the cost of this timepiece with our 0% finance offer, allowing you to purchase this watch from as little as £74.50 a month with a 20% deposit.

Omega Speedmaster 38 Co-Axial Chronograph 38mm Watch

Omega also offer superb watches for ladies. The Speedmaster 38mm Co-Axial Chronograph is one such watch. It has been crafted with simplicity, size and colour in mind, while still retaining the aesthetic and heritage of Omega’s most famous chronograph.

The timepiece comes with a stainless-steel case and bezel with a tachymeter scale on a white ceramic ring – perfect for the modern woman who values styles just as much as performance. The stunning mother-of-pearl dial includes diamond-trimmed horizontal oval subdials and a vertical oval date window at 6 o’clock. The indexes are rhodium-plated, and the hands are either rhodium-plated or rose.

This watch is powered by the Omega Co-Axial Calibre 3330 and, as a finishing touch, comes with a Seahorse medallion on the caseback.

The Omega Speedmaster 38 Co-Axial Chronograph 38mm watch is available for £4,720, and is also available to be purchased on 0% finance from just £78.67 per month with a 20% deposit.
