The Limited Edition Breitling Chronomat GMT Blacksteel

This week we are focusing on a timepiece that has previously been featured on our Watch of the Week column some time ago; named the superb Limited Edition Breitling Chronomat GMT Blacksteel. The Breitling trademark has always been firmly centred upon the creation of horological ‘instruments for professionals’, and there is little doubt that this substantial chronometer is anything but that. Selected by Banks Lyon Manager Bob Breden for its stunning levels of performance and extreme exclusivity, this instantly memorable timepiece is thoroughly worthy of being subjected to a second look.

Like all Breitling Chronomat watches, the limited edition Blacksteel Chronomat is ideally engineered for those who are going to be frequenting multiple time zones. The bidirectional rotating bezel comes equipped with a third time reading, but it is not only the actual operation of the wristwatch that is designed for globetrotters. For example, the black rubber strap of this Breitling makes use of an innovative deployment buckle to further enable convenience when travelling abroad. With a two-button quick release system to enable easy removal, the clasp can also be adjusted using a small concealed ratchet. This enables several millimetres of added strap size to be accessed should the owner’s wrist expand when travelling overseas; and all without any permanent alterations to the strap being needed.

As befits a GMT timepiece, the operation of the Breitling Chronomat Blacksteel is hugely precise. A quick date change can be implemented as required, and all of the functions that are controlled by the crown can be relied upon to maintain perpetual exactitude. This standard is assisted by the well-considered style of the crown as, once it is out of use, it sits flush against the recessed case to avoid any inadvertent adjustments being carried out. As Breitling possesses a particularly affinity with not only regular travellers, but also practising pilots, it comes as no surprise to see this Chronomat fitted with a tachymeter bezel; enabling measurements relating to speed or similar factors to be correctly monitored.

What you might not expect from a timepiece designed to be optimised for air travel is strong capabilities with regard to water. However, one look at this well-rounded chronometer would soon dissuade you of this notion. The matt finished steel caseback of the wristwatch is screwed on to facilitate an admirable level of waterproofing that will endure in depths of up to 200 metres. Similarly, the chronograph push buttons are also threaded in order to prevent water entry when they are not in use. Clearly, Breitling has aimed for this watch to be an instrument for every conceivable kind of professional. When one factors in the staggering 70 hour power reserve that is boasted by the BO4 calibre in-house movement, enabling the movement to remain wound for the longest possible extent, the Blacksteel is undoubtedly designed to excel in any sphere of life.

The name ‘Blacksteel’ unashamedly announces the aesthetic theme of this timepiece before one has even viewed it, but Breitling has not settled for the most obvious method of achieving this look. The steel case is coated in incredibly hard DLC (diamond-like-carbon) to attain the sleek onyx black appearance, although Breitling have differentiated this visual theme from those of certain competitor brands by using both a polished and a matt finish. DLC coatings always look extremely slick in appearance, in addition to being inert and astoundingly durable, so Breitling’s decision to proclaim this augmentation within the name of the wristwatch itself is an unquestionably sound choice.

Here at Banks Lyon, we are proud to stock a number of Breitling watches, but we are especially pleased to be able to bring this Limited Edition Chronomat GMT Blacksteel to you. This particular watch is limited to only 1000 models in worldwide circulation, and our own timepiece numbers 847 out of this tremendously exclusive number. The Chronomat GMT Blacksteel retails at £7,750 and, due to its vastly collectable nature, you must be sure to register your interest soon to avoid disappointment.
