The Omega Seamaster - An Iconic Watch

The origins of the Omega watch company began in 1848 when Louis Brandt began assembling pocket watches in Switzerland and selling them throughout Europe. These were the humble beginnings of the Omega Watch Company which is now considered by many to be one of the most well established manufacturers of high quality Swiss time pieces.

Today Omega dominates the global market for Swiss watches and it is little wonder considering the extensive range of truly revolutionary watches they have produced over the years. The Omega Seamaster, first manufactured in 1947 is one of the most well known of their watches and has managed to achieve an iconic status.

The Seamaster is famous for being worn by both actors to play James Bond since 1995’s Goldeneye . However, this watch had already achieved widespread recognition as stylish and pragmatic design classic long before it appeared on the wrist of 007. As one of the earliest water resistant watches the Omega Seamaster set a standard for the watches that followed it. Prior to the development of the Seamaster most watches were extremely susceptible to water damage and even an accidental splash or brief dip into fluid could seriously damage a watch.

There are a number of different variants on the Seamaster and one of the more recent additions to the family is the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean. The design of this specialist divers watch is very similar to another Omega classic, the Speedmaster, although the Planet Ocean is much larger in line with the current fashion for contemporary oversized watches. Some of the Planet Ocean watches feature a bright orange colouration on the bezel and alligator skin strap as Omega claim this colour is one of the most visible underwater. Whether you intend to wear this watch underwater or not the vivid colour certainly adds a contemporary twist to this classic design.

As the Seamaster is one of Omega’s most popular ranges it is likely that the future will see further developments and new variants being added to this already extensive family of watches.
