The French resort city of Cannes has recently been subjected to a spate of high profile watch and jewellery thefts. The latest unfortunate incident took place in close proximity to the venue of Cannes’ renowned yearly film festival, with burglars targeting a local supplier of luxury timepieces known as Kronometry. The criminals in question threatened the staff of Kronometry with explosives and firearms, before withdrawing with approximately 40 luxury wristwatches in their possession.
Mercifully, no staff or customers were harmed during the occurrence, and the concealed appearances of the thieves have meant that their identities have thus far remained unknown. However due to their situation within a Riviera town, the thefts have been provisionally connected with the infamous criminal group known as “Pink Pantherâ€. The exact value of the stolen watches has yet to be specified, and this particular robbery constitutes the second time that valuables have been stolen from Kronometry. One million pounds worth of similar watches were stolen from Kronometry during a preceding robbery in the first quarter of this year, and police are meticulously attempting to tighten appropriate levels of security in an effort to combat further episodes.
The investigation has been subjected to even closer levels of scrutiny than usual due to a raid upon the nearby Carlton hotel that took place just a few days before. A solitary intruder was responsible for the theft of various diamond embellished jewellery items in what is now being described as the largest instance of gem related larceny in the history of France. Further reported cases of criminal activity in the area include dual burglaries during May, where a necklace valued at 1.9 million Euros was taken from Cap d’Antibes, and another worth 777,000 Euros was removed from the hotel suite of a Chopard employee; a leading brand name that is perhaps most famous for its extensive selection of Chopard watches.
