OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean vs Seamaster 300m

OMEGA has been manufacturing world-class watches since their inception in 1848. The Swiss luxury brand is known for its superior quality and precision, which have allowed OMEGA to be the official timekeepers of the Olympic Games since 1932 and to produce the first watch taken to the moon in 1969.

Some of the most popular OMEGA watches include the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean and the OMEGA Seamaster 300m, which you can find here at Banks Lyon. As official OMEGA stockists, we offer a wide range of OMEGA Seamaster models designed to match your lifestyle, whether you’re in a tuxedo or a diver’s suit.

The automatic watches in the Seamaster line are C.O.S.C.-certified. This means that the movements in each timepiece are incredibly precise, having had to pass rigorous tests. Also, the diver’s bracelet is a key feature that provides all wearers with peace of mind; the sturdy nature of the bracelet means you don’t have to fear them unclasping in the middle of a dive or even during a special evening out.

The helium escape valve is another great feature of the range. It improves the performance of the watch, especially important for professional divers working at depth for long periods of time. This means that gases like helium and hydrogen can enter the watch or build up under pressure – depending on the quality of the watch, this can actually damage it, such as making the crystal detach from the piece.

However, with a helium escape valve, all trapped gases are released when the differential between the inner and outer pressure reaches a certain level, ensuring the functionality and, of course, the physical condition of the watch.

Two of the collection’s most famous lines are the OMEGA Planet Ocean watches and the Seamaster 300m, both of which present several similarities and differences. These make them suitable for everyday wear, sports events and special occasions, depending on your preferences.

The collection showcases the Swiss watchmaker’s passion for adventure and its strong maritime heritage.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Master Chronometer

This watch embodies the best of the collection: precision, performance and style. Certified by METAS and powered by the OMEGA Master Chronometer 8900 movement, the piece comes with a 43.5mm stainless-steel case with black ceramic dial and a co-axial escapement movement. This is also the first time that rubber has been blended with ceramic to create a new unidirectional diving bezel; orange rubber covers the first 15 minutes while Liquidmetal® is used for the markings.

Innovation and performance are perfectly balanced in this watch, and its gorgeous design also makes it ideal as a statement piece. The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Master Chronometer is available for purchase at Banks Lyon for £5,280 at 0% finance.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Watches

Inspired by the ocean, the pieces in the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean collection are the epitome of classic appeal, contemporary functionality and superb craftsmanship. Preferred by professional divers around the world, this line pays homage to OMEGA’S ocean heritage and is known for pushing the boundaries of watchmaking.

The collection has been selected by the British Royal Navy and helped two divers break world records in 1968 for simulated diving at 635m, and it was also chosen by Jacques Yves Cousteau for his diving endurance experiments. The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean is characterised by a helium release valve and a chronometer certification, as well as strong water resistance of up to 600m (or 2,000ft). Due to these and other excellent features, the timepieces are considered one of the best diver watches of all time.

OMEGA Planet Ocean 600m “Big Blue” GMT Watch

The Planet Ocean 600m “Big Blue” GMT piece is a superb example of OMEGA’s ‘art of ceramic watchmaking’. A combination of GMT and divers’ watch, this piece is fashioned from a single block of blue ceramic and sports a blue ceramic dial with an orange GMT track.

A blend of orange rubber and ceramic covers the first 15 minutes. The timepiece also features an OMEGA innovation: a patented ceramic Naiad Lock that keeps the engraved wording in place.

The rubber strap of the “Big Blue” has a fabric-like patterned appearance and is treated with an anti-bacterial coating. With a water-resistance of up to 60 bar and capable of withstanding magnetic forces up to 15,000 Gauss, this model comes with the Master Chronometer calibre 8906.

OMEGA Planet Ocean 600m “Big Blue” GMT Watch

OMEGA Seamaster 300m Watches

OMEGA has updated the collection with stunning new watches 25 years after the first Seamaster Diver 300m. The original design and spirit of the ocean are still present but have been remodelled with advanced materials and updated functionalities.

The Seamaster 300m collection is characterised by a helium escape valve and Super-LumiNova indexes and hands, as well as the fact that James Bond has been wearing them for years on-screen. The most recent 007, Daniel Craig, has worn both a Seamaster Diver 300m Co-Axial piece and a Planet Ocean 600m Co-Axial.

This sporty collection is a tribute to OMEGA’s maritime legacy and adventurous pioneering spirit, which have led to great innovation in the horology universe.

Planet Ocean or Seamaster 300m?

Some of the differences between the models in these collections include their water resistance, as mentioned above. While the Planet Ocean is resistant up to 600 metres, the Seamaster 300m has a resistance of up to 300 metres. This difference is crucial if you’re looking to achieve deeper dives.

Most watches in the Planet Ocean range are also Master Chronometer-certified, ensuring a high degree of precision. Another difference is the case size. The Seamaster 300m models have smaller cases, usually 41mm or 42mm in size, while the Planet Ocean’s are slightly larger at 45mm. While this may seem insignificant, it can make all the difference when worn on the wrist.

Both lines make use of the co-axial escapement movement, come with a helium escape valve, and offer outstanding timepieces that have been designed and produced with performance and quality in mind. They also offer the Super-LumiNova feature, which guarantees visibility underwater even in the harshest of conditions by allowing the indexes and hands to glow in the dark.

If you’re unsure whether a Planet Ocean or a Seamaster 300m is best suited for you, consider your lifestyle. For example, the larger cases of the Planet Ocean watches may be the best choice if you’re a professional looking to explore greater depths. The Seamaster 300m looks just as good in a wetsuit as it does in formal or everyday wear, making it a fantastic option for those seeking a fashionable piece that still offers a high degree of functionality and water resistance.
