A Timepiece to Die-trich For: The OT2-UKW Special Edition Launches

Should you follow us on Twitter, cast your mind back to the 6th July, when we announced our expertly curated watch of the day – a member of the Dietrich watches family. It was certainly not a decision we took lightly, but when we received this particular timepiece, with its striking aesthetic, we were never in doubt that this watch is an icon in the making.

Fans of the Dietrich watch brand will already be familiar with the show-stopping pieces created by the company; however, many may be unfamiliar with the watch-makers, who are, at least in horological terms, fairly new to the market. Dietrich is the brainchild of French artist, Emmanuel Dietrich, who after several years working with global brands, decided to ‘invite his audience into his own universe.’

The result; watches such as the powerhouse of design that is the UK special edition Dietrich OT2-UKW. It’s a display of sheer force unlike any other piece available – in some ways it’s rather evident that the OT2-UKW is derived from the world of art. Like all great works of art, its purpose is to make a statement. The bold dial features 4 layers: the first and third are sun brushed black, while the second and fourth feature vertical brushed black.

The OT of the name stands for ‘Organic Time’, a theme which runs throughout the piece’s overall style, thanks to the clean, fluid lines and shapes that strike the across the outer face. These additions are clearly inspired by organic phenomena in nature. When one studies this design, one might easily draw comparisons to the intricate design of a cobweb, or perhaps plant spores. Continuing that inspiration, the piece’s hands are also heavily influenced by the natural world; specifically the classic, simple curves of leaves. Beyond that, the face is also adorned with a smaller 24-hour indicator and second hand – or star, in fact – that are similar, at first glance, to a heavily stylised snowflake, or a reflected beam of sunlight.

Despite such organic inspiration, the timepiece looks incredibly futuristic – as we’ve said, there is nothing quite like the Dietrich OT2-UKW available to those who appreciate well-designed watches. Both the steel case itself, and the bezel, is coated with blasted and polished micro-beads and black PVD with white accents, and protected by custom sapphire glass.

The watch’s movement is automatic, using the modified mechanical movement of a Miyamoto 82-S-7, with an open view on the escapement dial side. Water resistant to a depth of 50m, the timepiece measures 48mm in length, and 49mm wide when including the crown – the crown itself, incidentally, is emblazoned with a ‘69’; a reference to the year of Emmanuel Dietrich’s birth. The total height reaches 13.7mm, with a weight of 128 grams – this includes the bracelet, although wearers can switch out strap styles, opting for the more military-esque nylon or leather, available in a range of colours.
