Essential Calendar Dates: Sports and Culture

Just as you can find out a lot about a person by the watch they wear, you can also discover a lot from the events that they attend. A glimpse at somebody’s schedule can offer insights into their personality, their lifestyle and their aspirations. So which events are the highlight of your calendar?

Sporting Events

Royal Ascot – 20th June – 24th June 2017

Whilst it may be over for this year, Royal Ascot is an annual fixture on our calendar. Should you have been unfortunate enough to miss out on this year’s racing extravaganza, this is a perfect time to look ahead to next year, as tickets remain at this year’s prices for a limited period.

Longines, of course, have a longstanding connection with equestrian sports and with Royal Ascot in particular, with a brand of elegance that is perfectly in keeping with this stylish and iconic event.

Cartmel Races – 16th July – 18th July 2016

Set in a picturesque Cumbrian village, Cartmel Racecourse may be considered small by some, but it is exceptionally popular. Perhaps it’s because of their clever scheduling – with one meeting on the Saturday and one on the Monday, allowing attendees to enjoy a pleasant Sunday in the Lake District as well as enjoying the races!

Last year, jockey Lisa O’Neill rode Tempo Mac to victory in the Lady Riders Handicap Hurdle, and was presented with a stunning diamond pendant by our very own Rodney Banks Lyon as part of her prize.

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – 5th August – 27th August 2016

An amazing spectacle of pipes, drums, music and dance, set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is often said to be one of the greatest shows on earth.

Televised annually to 100 million people worldwide, this year’s programme is set to include displays by the New Zealand Army Band and Lochiel Marching Drill Team, in the company of His Majesty The King’s Guard from Norway, and the Imps Motorcycle Display Team alongside the Royal Jordanian Armed Forces Band and Drill Team.

The BBC Proms – 15th July- 10th September

The BBC’s annual season of classical concerts is now in its 122nd year, featuring over 90 concerts across eight weeks, with music from a wide range of composers performed by top orchestras and symphonies.

The most popular event is, of course, the Last Night, an event in a lighter vein to the rest of the season, often attended in fancy dress. Prommers often queue for hours – even overnight – outside the Royal Albert Hall in London to attend.

Cannes Film Festival – 17th May – 28th May 2017

For glamour and luxury, there’s little to beat the Cannes Film Festival. The stunning setting of the French Riviera combines with all the allure and sophisticated charm of Hollywood for a very exciting and opulent event.

Official partner Chopard, who make the sought-after Palme d’Or trophy, adds to this air of elegance with their jewellery often seen on the red carpet.
