International Women’s Day and Astley Clarke

Astley Clarke

Thursday 8th March marks International Women’s Day, an annual celebration of women with an agenda for gender parity. This day has been observed as far back as the early 1900s, recognising the achievements of women in all areas of life.

To celebrate, we have been thinking about the great women in jewellery who have achieved great success through their creativity, innovation and drive to create something beautiful. We couldn’t think of any brand more closely aligned with International Women’s Day than Astley Clarke.

International Women’s Day 2018

Each year, International Women’s Day centres around a specific theme. In previous years, the themes of #BeBoldforChange and #PledgeforParity have been used, and this year will see the theme of #PressforProgress. This theme recognises the findings released by the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report that suggest that gender parity is 217 years away, while calling for people to help reduce this by pressing for progress.

The Woman Behind Astley Clarke

Astley Clarke is a modern, luxury British jewellery brand which creates pieces that allow the wearer to ‘go precious every day’. The brand was founded by Bec Astley Clarke MBE, a perfect representation of the International Women’s Day movement. In an interview on her website, she stated,

“More and more women buy jewellery for themselves and we are in celebration of that movement. A lot of the traditional jewellery brands still focus on men buying diamond pendants for their girlfriends, but we definitely have women coming to us to treat themselves.”

This idea informs the concept behind the brand, allowing women to wear beautiful jewellery every day rather than waiting for a special occasion to wear their favourite pieces. This is why the Astley Clarke collections offer a relaxed luxury, combining precious stones and striking designs with a sense of simplicity to create pieces that bring a little luxury to every day.

Bec Astley Clarke has achieved so much success with her jewellery, she was awarded an MBE in 2013 for services to jewellery by Her Royal Majesty the Queen.

The Biography Collection

The Astley Clarke Biography collection is the perfect collection to buy a gift for yourself from. Not only is the range particularly affordable, it also features pieces that offer meaning, so you can choose something that resonates with you.

The collection was inspired by the Indian festival, Rakhi and the symbolic bracelets that are exchanged during the festival. Each of the pieces features a symbolic talisman that has its own meaning, offering a specific narrative and energy to the wearer.

The talismans include the anchor which symbolises stability, the halo which represents eternity, the wishbone which symbolises hope, amongst many others.

Each piece within the collection features talismans alongside bright colours, making these bracelets, necklaces and earrings particularly distinctive.

The Evil Eye

The Astley Clarke Evil Eye Biography Bracelet, available for £125, features hand-cut lapis lazuli gemstones with a sapphire pavé and turquoise Evil Eye charm set in 18-carat yellow gold plated sterling silver. The Evil Eye charm symbolises wisdom, a perfect piece for the modern woman.

The Astley Clarke Lapis Evil Eye Kula Bracelet (pictured) is a similar design but at an even more affordable price of £90. This piece features a nugget fastening so the wearer can adjust it to fit perfectly.

To complete the look, the Astley Clarke Mini Evil Eye Biography Stud Earrings are available for just £70. These studs are crafted using gemstone pavé set in 18-carat yellow gold-plated sterling silver. The simple design means that the wearer is able to mix and match, creating different looks with other pieces from the collection.

The Cosmos

The Cosmos talisman is featured on a selection of bracelets, representing infinity. The Astley Clarke Purple Haze Dégradé Biography Bracelet displays the Cosmos talisman surrounded by purple beads. It features black spinel, rhodolite, amethyst, pyrite, red topaz faceted gemstones with the rhodolite Cosmos charm which is set in 18-carat yellow gold-plated sterling silver. This bracelet is available for £125.

The Astley Clarke Rose Quartzite Kula Bracelet offers the same charm, but is surrounded by rose coloured quartzite and features a nugget fastening for an adjustable fit.

The Cosmos earrings are available in a variety of styles, ranging from the Astley Clarke Rose Gold Mini Cosmos Stud Earrings, available for £395 to the Astley Clarke Sterling Silver Mini Cosmos Stud Earrings which can be purchased for a lower price of £125.
