Rolex is Inspired by Ancient Innovation

The titans of the watch making industry have developed a chronometer specifically designed for global travelers.  Recently released, the Rolex Sky-Dweller is derived from the Oyster Perpetual collection; a prestigious array of watches created with a passion for precision. Aesthetically, these models have evolved subtly over the years, but their unmistakable Rolex distinctiveness continues to be integrated within the core of the watches.

The design of the Sky-Dweller timepiece is inspired by the planetary and satellite wheels; discovered by Greek astrologers, the astronomical cycles illustrate the alignment patterns between the sun, moon and earth. The intricate system entitled Saros has been used since antiquity to explain the setting and rising of the sun; the same intricate logic is evident within the Sky-Dweller.

The Calibre 9001 chronometric mechanism is a certified Swiss chronometer. The title is reserved for high-precision watches which have been approved by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, a prestigious classification achieved by all Rolex watches.

The height of precision is incorporated into the Sky-Dweller; the local time is displayed by the central hands and a chosen reference time via a rotating disc visible on the dial. The date is shown beneath the signature Rolex Cyclops lens and discreet apertures surrounding the circumference of the dial represent the month. The Rolex Sky-Dweller is the very first Rolex to feature a dual time zone and an annual calendar.

It is appropriate that Rolex should take inspiration from Saros; ancient Greek civilization were a population of innovative developers of technology. Rolex watches have shared this passion for continual development and progression as they change and adapt to create watches that are simultaneously technical achievements and timeless artifacts.
