THE HISTORY OF IWC WATCHES

Founded by the famous Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones (or “F. A. Jones”), IWC Schaffhausen is an international watch company with a particular affinity for pilot’s watches. Established in 1868 Schaffhausen as the “International Watch Co.”, Ariosto blended the American aptitude for progressive production with the craftsmanship of the Swiss horological industry to create world-class timepieces that excel in terms of both form and function. The reputation of IWC watches was soon firmly anchored behind the introduction of the eponymous Jones calibre movement (widely hailed as a huge success), and it wasn’t long before innovations like digital hour and minute displays followed within Pallweber pocket watches, along with the arrival of the 64-calibre pocket watch movement at the close of the 19th century.

In the mid-1950’s IWC watches rolled out its much-famed Calibre 89 movement, a mechanically-wound movement that would power the brands models from its creation until the early 1990s. The movement gained a reputation for its unrivalled accuracy and longevity; the Calibre 89 movement has certainly stood the test of time with many of the watches it is installed in still being fully functional today.

Throughout the years, these watch makers have stayed true to their motto ‘Probus Scafusia’: a Latin phrase meaning ‘good solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen’. The brand is renowned around the world for creating and distributing some of the very best luxury watches consistently over the course of their history.

IWC Schaffhausen’s Commitment To The Environment

IWC now boasts continued production of mechanical timepieces, along with a strong commitment to social responsibility and conservation.

IWC’s passion for what is known as “the sustainability principle” is manifest within partnerships such as a support for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Charles Darwin Foundation, as well as pledges to use 100% renewable energy to generate electricity, reduce CO2 emissions, and to recycle both rainwater and heat. The company takes its social, economic and environmental responsibilities extremely seriously, and continues to embrace cutting-edge horological innovations while doing so. In 2018 they became the first Swiss luxury watch brand.

In December 2018, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) released an official report which focused on environmental ratings for 15 major watch manufacturers and jewellers in Switzerland. In the report, IWC were rated as ‘Ambitious’ and ranked at number 1 among the 15 manufacturers. The report noted that IWC had shown “serious commitment towards a sustainable transformation”.

METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL

IWC’s situation upon the banks of the River Rhine is unusual for a Swiss watchmaker, but it’s this location that has played a role in shaping IWC’s technological principles. Each IWC watch undergoes impact, abrasion, corrosion, UV and climate tests, along with practical tests within everyday situations, so when you purchase a timepiece from IWC, you’re assured of the very highest quality. The company takes pride in keeping records for every watch they create, never losing track of a single timepiece, so their attention to detail and precision is immaculate in all respects.

Historiclly IWC has made a range of famous watch brands, and today, the range has expanded to include new collections that fuse everyday timepieces with some of the characteristic haute horlogerie. At Banks Lyon Jewellers, we have the following IWC watches available:

IWC Aquatimer Watches – the professional divers’ watch, IWC Aquatimer watches are suitable for exploring the deepest oceans. Thanks to an advanced sealing system installed within each watch in the Aquatimer range, there is effective protection against water, dust and other external influencers.  The most advanced models within this family boast an impressive water-resistance up to 100 or 200 bar, making them suitable for deep-sea diving.

IWC Portofino Watches – with over 30 years of history, these watches perfectly captured the timelessly elegant, understated embodiment of Mediterranean style. Featuring an uncluttered dial with Roman numerals and simple hour markers, the Portofino has firmly established itself as one of IWC’s most sought after watch families.

IWC Pilot’s Watches – precisely designed timepieces boasting outstanding technology for pilots, these watches have gained global renown as precise timepieces that are perfectly suited for the cockpit. The most iconic watch within the collection is almost certainly the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch, which features enlarged features, including large numbers on the dial and a particularly large crown; the emphasised features made it simple for pilots in the early years of aviation, where they had to brave the elements in the sky on a regular basis.

IWC Portugieser Watches – one of IWC’s oldest and best-known collections, a genuine tour de force of haute horlogerie. Hailing from the 1930s and boasting an iconic design, Portugieser is famed for an imposing size, Arabic numerals, slim hands and a railway-track-style chapter ring; this collection was well ahead of its time. Today, you will find the Portugieser range has a simple and understated design which is loved by watch aficionados around the globe.

Frequently Asked Questions About Banks Lyon's IWC Watches

How Do I Care for My IWC Watch?

To keep your IWC watch in the best condition, we recommend the following actions:

  • Winding: Mechanical IWC watches must be wound if you do not wear the watch regularly. Wind it manually with about 20 revolutions of the crown to ensure perfect accuracy.
  • Water Resistance: Each model has a specific water resistance indicated on its listing. However, it’s best to avoid exposing any of them to excessive moisture over long periods of time as the seal will wear and degrade over time. However, the seal can be serviced and repaired to ensure the long-term condition of your watch. The one exception is the Aquatimer range, which is our most durable choice for water sports and other activities. Even then, though, you mustn’t pull out the crown of the watch when underwater, as this will risk internal movement. Remember to quickly rinse your watch with clean, fresh water and dry it after you have been in the ocean to prevent damage from salt water or excessive moisture.
  • Service: Regular watch servicing by a professional like Banks Lyon will help maintain its mechanical accuracy and appearance. Our skilled technicians will clean and lubricate the intricate movements and check the seal to maintain water resistance. Trust us to preserve the longevity and accuracy of your watch, ensuring it continues to perform at its best.
  • Cleaning: We recommend using a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the sapphire crystal glass and remove any fingerprints or smudges. A standard reading glass cleaning cloth is a great choice, but do not use harsh chemicals to clean it as they may damage the glass. If you notice any significant scratches or issues, consult with a professional to address them. For any specific care tips or repairs, our team provide expert assistance to ensure your watch remains in excellent condition.
What Is the Warranty Period for an IWC Watch?

IWC watches come with a 2-year international warranty covering manufacturing defects. By registering your watch through the My IWC program, you can extend the warranty by an additional 6 years, providing a total of 8 years of coverage.

If your IWC watch requires service during your warranty period, you can bring or send it in its original labelled box to either of our stores. Please note that you may be responsible for transportation costs, including postage, insurance, and packing materials. For added peace of mind, we recommend using certified delivery and insurance when sending your watch.

To ensure your service request is processed under the international limited warranty, your watch must be accompanied by the original warranty card or certificate. We will need to update this card, as only official IWC stockists are permitted to complete this warranty documentation.

The International Limited Warranty does not cover defects or damages caused by external factors such as loss, theft, natural disasters, or accidents. It also excludes damages resulting from misuse, negligence, or improper use, including knocks, dents, or alterations to the watch’s functionality. Additionally, services or repairs carried out by non-authorised parties, as well as the use of non-recommended components, void the warranty. Normal wear and tear, as well as watches with altered or illegible serial numbers, are also not covered. Finally, the warranty does not cover routine maintenance or minor inaccuracies that fall within industry tolerance.

Can I Pay for an IWC Watch in Monthly Instalments?

Yes, we offer watches with 0% finance to spread the cost over up to 60 months; you can choose a payment plan that best suits your budget. Deposits start from as little as 10%, allowing you to secure your desired watch with minimal initial outlay.

Finance terms are available on all new watches priced above £500, with additional finance options available for pre-owned items and sale products. Customers across the United Kingdom can take advantage of these plans to spread the cost of their purchase comfortably.

To apply, simply select your desired product and click “Add to Bag.” At the checkout, choose the finance option that suits your needs and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the application process. Approval is subject to status, and applicants must be over 18, with terms and conditions applying.

As an example, for a watch priced at £10,500 (such as the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40) with a 25% deposit of £2,625, you would pay the remaining £7,875 over 60 months with no interest, at just £131.25 per month. Finance is provided by V12 Retail Finance, offering a straightforward and transparent way to manage your luxury purchase.

What Is the Significance of the Pellaton Winding System in IWC Watches?

The Pellaton winding system is unique to IWC Schaffhausen’s engineering excellence, offering a unique and highly efficient mechanism for automatic watches. Developed by Albert Pellaton in the 1950s, this system uses a bidirectional rotor that winds the mainspring when moving in either direction. What sets the Pellaton system apart is its use of ceramic components that are virtually wear-free, ensuring long-lasting durability and reducing the need for maintenance. The design also minimises energy loss, allowing the watch to maintain its precision over time.

The Pellaton winding system is featured in several key IWC collections. It is used in the Portugieser Automatic, particularly with the 52010 and 52610 calibres, as well as in the Big Pilot’s Watch, notably with the 52110 calibres. The Ingenieur collection, designed for precision, also incorporates this system, as does the Da Vinci series. Additionally, some Portofino models use the Pellaton winding system, blending classic elegance with mechanical reliability. These watches reflect IWC’s commitment to advanced technology and refined design.
