OMEGA has been at the forefront of the Olympic Games for over three decades now. As the Official Timekeeper of the sporting event, the watchmakers ensure that every event is timed with the utmost precision. When every millisecond counts and there are so many varying requirements in each event, OMEGA is at the start line so that each jump, sprint, dive, and handspring is timed precisely.
As part of this, OMEGA has released a range of commemorative, Olympics-inspired watches, which Banks Lyon, official stockist of OMEGA watches, is proud to stock. So, we are looking into the role of Official Timekeeper at the Olympic Games, how OMEGA ensure that records are verified with accuracy, and the Paris 2024 watches you can purchase right here.
OMEGA’s History at the Olympics
To look at OMEGA’s entire Olympic history, we need to go back to Los Angeles 1932, when the company became the first watchmaker to time the entirety of an Olympic Games with just one member of staff and 30 chronographs.
Over the years, there have been many technological advancements and unique methods tried and tested to ensure accuracy and provide precise results. For example, at the 1963 Winter Olympic Games, OMEGA used a chronograph at the start and one at the end of the ski races. The first would note down the start time of the skier, and the one at the finish line would note down the finish time; it would not be until later on that the results were calculated.
Fortunately, a lot has changed since then. In 2010, at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, OMEGA introduced a red flash gun to replace the classic starting piston. Similarly, at Rio 2016, OMEGA brought the ‘Scan’O’Vision MYRIA photofinish’ camera to assist the 450 timekeepers, which recorded over 10,000 images per second.
Now, during OMEGA’s 31st Olympic Games, the timekeepers promise to bring with them the most advanced technology yet to provide accuracy and reliable results.
OMEGA at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024
With less than a month to go until 2024’s Olympic Games and less than two months until the Paralympic Games, everything is ready and waiting for the whistle to blow and the timer to start ticking. OMEGA is yet again at the forefront of time during all 329 events across 32 sports, and as official stockists of OMEGA watches, we are excited to see what the watchmakers do differently this year. As mentioned, there are constant technological advancements, and all is yet to be revealed in terms of methods and the timekeepers attending the events.
Often, there are milliseconds between bronze, silver, and gold medals, so the most precise timings are absolutely essential. This is the same for the Paralympic games, which OMEGA has announced will have unique additions to guarantee accuracy for this event.
