The first man landed on the Moon on 20th July 1969 and this historic event generally regarded as one of the human race’s crowning scientific achievements. When Buzz Aldrin set foot onto the Moon’s surface, he was wearing an Omega Speedmaster watch. 40 years later in 2009, Omega is celebrating the Anniversary of the first Moon landing in style, with the release of the . To prove this watches endurance, before the moon landing expedition in 1965, five different brands of chronographs were purchased “off the shelf†and taken to NASA for testing. Amazingly the Speedmaster passed NASA’s numerous tests including exposure to extreme temperatures, intense humidity, vacuum, shock, corrosion, pressure, acceleration, noise and vibration, whereas other well known brands failed in these areas.
Â
Noteably, this watch was most useful on the failed Apollo 13 mission in 1970. When all of the on board computers and failed, the only way that the crew could make accurate timings was through their wristwatches. If the Omega Speedmaster had not been accurate the outcome of that mission could have been very different indeed.
