The Rolex Explorer watch is the perfect watch for all occasions, from climbing the heights of Mount Everest to a family wedding. It is well known, that the watch was made in honour of Sir Edmund Hilary who in 1953 was the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest and he was, wearing an Explorer wristwatch.

As the name suggests, the Rolex Explorer watch was designed to be able to withstand extreme conditions, with it’s high visibility dial and an extra strong case. The new Rolex Explorer II watch, introduced in the 1970’s, has a fourth hand, which can display a 24 hour notation of the time, fantastic for expeditions above or below ground at either end of the world, where the real time might not be so easy to guess.

The Rolex Explorer II watch, being honest, was not very popular when it was first released. However, in 1991 the re-launch of the Explorer II, with sapphire glass and the same movement as the Rolex GMT-Master II, allowed the watch to make a comeback, and the Explorer II’s popularity phenomenally increased. Some of the early models from the 50’s and 60’s can fetch tens of thousands of pounds from avid collectors.
The latest Explorer II watch is made from 904L steel, usually used in the chemical industry, where resistance against corrosion is essential. This type of steel is extremely rough, yet highly polishable. The watch is of an average size at 40mm, so would suit most wrist types. It is water resistant to 100m and has a self winding Oyster movement and is an officially certified Swiss chronometer.

In my opinion, owners of Explorer II watches appreciate the “sporty†look of the watch and the fact the watch has high durability, meaning that it can be worn every day. Most of the people I have spoken too, who actually own an Explorer II watch have had theirs for a long period of time, say 20 years, and still say that it is the only watch they will ever consider wearing on a long term basis. The Rolex Explorer II is now available with a Black or White dial
