Which IWC Watch is the Best Investment?

By Maxine

As we continue our ‘which watches are worth investing in?’ series (preceded by our guides on Cartier and OMEGA investments), we now turn to a collector’s favourite - IWC.

IWC has released many iconic watches in its 150-year history, from the Portugieser to the Pilot, offering a wide selection of timepieces that maintain their worth over time. I’m going through my top 5 recommendations for watches that stand the test of time - as well as looking incredibly stylish.

1. Ingenuier Automatic

If you’re looking for heritage IWC, the Ingenuier Automatic takes this iconic design in a modern format, with the unmistakable Gérald Genta-inspired aesthetic. Originally created in the 1950s for scientists to resist magnetic fields, this watch is defined by its bezel secured by five functional screws.

I adore the latest range of Ingenieur Automatic 40’s which have that more vibrant feel, such as reference IW328903 with a deep green grid-pattern dial.

2. Portugieser Chronograph

Researching IWC watches worth investing in always leads you to one watch (and for good reason): the Portugieser Chronograph. Not only are you given the mechanics of an automatic watch to give you the traditional horological experience, but a timeless dress piece that transcends trends.

A slightly less traditional, perhaps more bold version of the Portugieser; my personal choice is reference IW371620. Its blue and white panda aesthetic creates a modern contrasting effect, and you’re guaranteed wearability with that blue rubber strap.

3. Pilot’s Watch Mark XX

I’d describe the pilot’s watch as the ultimate ‘daily wear’ investment. It’s appreciated by collectors for its design that remains stylish year-after-year, historical military pedigree, and daily usability. It has a build that’ll endure your daily activities, long-lasting power reserves and a reliable in-house calibre.

I have two for you on this particular watch. One is reference IW328201, an all-black, sophisticated choice. Alternatively reference IW328203 uses a monochromatic look, instead in a deep blue with white stitching on the strap.

4. Pilot’s Chronograph Top Gun

In the collector’s community, watches with a certain sense of limitedness or exclusivity tend to age well with time, as you’d expect. For IWC, this comes in the form of Top Gun watches, which were built for the Top Gun Academy in the American military, and the subsequent films that depict it. Created for the extreme conditions elite jet pilots face, these pieces bring adventure to the wrist, for a reliable, collectable IWC watch.

Maxine’s Recommendation: The classic IWC Pilot’s Chronograph Top Gun is my choice here. A matte black dial, accompanying fabric strap and of course the impressive 69380 Calibre. For those who like a bolder presence on the wrist, IW389101 brings you a 44.5mm case, whereas the IWC389401 has a smaller 41mm version.

5. Portofino Automatic

Refined, classic, and smart, the Portofino Automatic is the final recommendation I have on investment-worthy IWC watches. It uses the style of pocket watches as central to its design, bringing a vintage aesthetic with the mechanics of modern watchmaking.

Maxine’s Recommendation: A Portofino with an element of character is the IWC Portofino Automatic Moon Phase IW459401. It gives you the vintage appeal with a leather strap and clean white dial, with the added characteristic of the moon phase calculator.
