A History of Earrings

The ubiquitous earring is a universally accepted form of bodily adornment in contemporary society, but many people do not realise quite how far back the tradition for earrings actually stretches. Some of the earliest documented evidence for earring usage is present in the ancient Persian city of Persepolis. The ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, Persepolis exhibits wall reliefs that depict Persian soldiers wearing ear jewellery, and textual evidence for the existence of earrings is also found from passages dating to approximately 1500 BC in the Bible.

The first truly widespread popularisation of earrings occurred during the English Renaissance, and gold, pearl or gemstone earrings were regularly worn by courtiers and gentlemen during this period. Sailors also used earrings as a symbol of prestige which signified that they had undertaken some appropriately heroic nautical venture. The indigenous Ainu men and women of Japan were especially notable for using earrings as a part of their traditional attire, and even though the practice was at one time banned by the Japanese government the habit proved to be so ingrained that it resurfaced again many years later in the 1950s and 1960s.

‘Commercial’ use of earrings, with ear piercing services and unisex earrings, did not become widely established until the 1960s and 1970s; and it was also this time that saw the regular usage of multiple piercings. A huge amount of specialist ear piercings are now in use, and the scope of earring types has now become similarly varied. Studs, hoop and dangle earrings are among the most popular varieties, but other styles such as ear threads and ear spikes are also evident in certain environments.

Here at Banks Lyon, we specialise in providing an extensive array of luxury earrings from a comprehensive range of desirable brand names, including artistic and Italian spirited Fope earrings, delightful Pandora earrings and the uniquely innovative Links of London earrings. In addition to these pieces we also stock a plethora of other earring designs that do not owe their allegiance to any specific brand name, but that are nevertheless stunning examples of jewellery craftsmanship. The pair of earrings pictured above are an archetypal illustration of this fact, and would not look out of place in any function; no matter how decorated such an event might be.

These particular earrings conform to a cluster style, and exhibit three concentric circles of brilliant cut 0.84 carat diamonds to unerringly draw the eye. These radiant stones are set into 18 carat white gold for an extra touch of sophistication, and their design also makes them enormously practical for daily wear as well. The cluster style enables these earrings to maintain a far lighter setting than might be normal for this size of earring, allowing the jewellery to comfortably sit flat against the ear to ensure an optimal fit.

This superb pair of 18ct White Gold 0.84ct Diamond Cluster Stud earrings is on sale at Banks Lyon for 36 monthly payments of £37.00 alongside a deposit of 20%.
