Breitling News & Releases

Renowned for their reliability and sturdy case, all watches within the Breitling Chronomat range are the perfect timepiece for the adventurous souls among us.

Breitling’s passion for continuous improvement of this range means that the precision and technology used within these timepieces are unrivalled, making any watch within the Chronomat range extremely desirable to watch aficionados.

History of Breitling

Breitling’s vast history in watchmaking began in the Swiss Jura mountains with Leon Breitling founding a workshop specialising in precision timers and chronographs in 1884.

By 1915, Leon’s son, Gaston, had invented the first independent chronograph push piece on a wristwatch. Over the next 8 years, Breitling perfected this system by separating start/stop functions from that of resetting, enabling the timepiece to add up several times in succession. This breakthrough was extremely useful for calculating flight times as well as timing in sports competitions.

Such was the quality of Breitling’s timekeeping that WWII RAF fighter planes were fitted with Breitling onboard aircraft chronographs. In the following years, Breitling played a key role in the rise of commercial aviation, with many aircrafts having Breitling-made chronographs installed as standard; the company’s heavy involvement within the aviation industry led to Breitling being named the “official supplier to world aviation.”

In 1952, Breitling launched the truly iconic Navitimer, a timepiece that has since gone on to become a cult object for anyone involved in aeronautics. The Navitimer became the first wrist chronograph to travel into space with Scott Carpenter in 1962 and remains the oldest mechanical chronograph still in production today.

By 1984, Breitling had launched the Chronomat range; this collection of watches still remains one of Breitling’s most popular thanks to their sturdy and resilient reputation.

The brand built an ultra-modern facility named Breitling Chronométrie in La Chaux-de- Fonds, whose primary focus was to develop the production of mechanical chronograph movements further. In this facility, Breitling created the Manufacture Calibre 01, a self-winding chronograph movement that has since been tweaked to provide other high-performance movements.
