In 1848 Louis Brandt started an assembly workshop in La Chauz de Fonds in Switzerland, marking the birth of Omega watches. Then 84 years later in 1932, during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles Omega was wholly responsible for the timekeeping during sporting events, controlling 30 chronographs.
1937 saw the launch of water resistant watches which could also resist massive variations of temperatures. This soon led to the introduction of the Omega Seamaster watches in 1948, designed to conquer the ocean waves. The Seamaster watch range has enjoyed many years of popularity, and little has changed in the fundamental design of the watch over several decades. Most recently, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch is adorning Daniels Craig’s wrist in the 2009 James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, following the Omega Seamaster Pro Chronometer watch featured in Casino Royale.
The Omega Constellation watches were launched in 1952, a dynamic range of watches for both men and women. Omega Constellation watches incorporate stunning diamonds and a sleek lines in a design that represents fashion, taste and decoration. This range of watches includes the Omega Constellation Double Eagle Chronometer watch, featuring its own power reserve and an indicator of when the main spring would need to be wound to recharge.
Most famously, 1957 saw the release of the Omega Speedmaster watch, designed for research, engineering and sport. The Speedmaster design has won respect the world over as a horological masterpiece, a thing of precision, durability and beauty. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph watch was the first watch on the moon, worn by Buzz Aldren in 1969, passing strenuous endurance tests by NASA. Now, 2009 has seen the release of the
Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 Limited Edition Watch.
The Omega De Ville watch range is the largest group within the Omega collection; the models are simple, following a tradition as the classic gentleman’s everyday watch. The Omega De Ville Hour Vision watch is the new comer to this grand old family and incorporates a unique case enhancing the visibility of the movement through translucent sapphire lateral-openings. This Hour Vision watch’s most striking feature is the grooved rhodium plated hour track on the dial complemented by an elegantly faceted solid gold hour markers.
1999 Omega made history once again by introducing the co-axial escapement into its automatic timepieces. This co-axial technology uses radial friction granting longer service intervals, greater accuracy over time and longer power reserves, evidence that Omega watches are always at the forefront of technical innovations and accurate timekeeping.
