Cartier's Signature Movement

When it was first teased to the public through a series of videos by Cartier in preparation for its eventual release at the 2010 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, or as it is commonly known the SSIH, the Calibre de Cartier 1904 MC has been a polarizing timepiece for many watch enthusiasts.

The Calibre de Cartier is a Classic Cartier Timepiece

The watch bears the fairly large case size that so many modern watches have adopted to keep with the modern tastes. At 42mm, however, the MC 1904’s case fits beautifully on the wrist and does not look oversized in the slightest, despite the large case. The design of the case itself has several unique and striking elements to it, the large, curving lugs and the fluted ring around the inner edge are both features of the watch that give it a striking yet elegant look on the wrist.

The watch gains its name from the movement that powers it, with the Calibre 1904 MC.  The 1904 naming of the movement refers to the inception of Cartier as a company, when Louis Cartier created a watch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont. The Calibre de Cartier 1904 MC is Cartier’s first in-house automatic movement, and boasts several new features, like a system of ball bearings at the centre of the rotor which provide shock resistance and help improve durability and the bi-directional winding rotor mechanism that facilitates easier winding of the watch, making it easier for the movement to last longer.

The latest addition to the beautiful range of Cartier watches carries with it the storied history of the Swiss watchmaker, while maintaining a contemporary appeal.
