Celebrating Rio’s Olympic Records

celebrating rios olympic records

The Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro have truly been an extraordinary couple of weeks for athletic achievement. For Team GB, it’s been a spectacular success, with our athletes bringing home more medals than ever achieved before at an overseas Olympics – despite the traditional mantra that an Olympic host country can never expect to do well at the following Games.

The Olympic Games is always a showcase for incredible achievement, as men and women from around the world compete not only against each other but against all those who’ve come before. Taking home not only a medal but also a World or Olympic Record is something every athlete, in every discipline, dreams of.

Timed to split-second precision by the official timekeepers at Omega, here are just a few of the remarkable moments of the Rio Games.

Golden Couple

Still in the cycling, Laura Trott became the country’s most successful female Olympian, bringing home her fourth gold medal with success in the Omnium event. Meanwhile, her fiancé Jason Kenny broke his own previous Olympic record in the Men’s Sprint with a time of just 9.551 seconds, as well as picking up a gold alongside his fellow cyclists in the Men’s Team Sprint and setting a record of 42.440 seconds, and then claiming his sixth gold medal in a dramatic Keirin final to equal Sir Chris Hoy’s record medal haul.

Great Olympic Moments

Whilst Usain Bolt has made history as the first man to take Olympic gold in both the 100m and the 200m three times in a row, on this side of the ocean, Mo Farah is the track star of choice. He made headlines when he took a dramatic tumble in the final of the men’s 10,000m race – and still went on to take the gold. Like Bolt, he is aiming for a repeat of his Olympic double triumph in London, with eyes firmly set on Sunday’s 5,000m final.
