Chopard and TAG Heuer Stand Out Among European Watch of the Year Winners

Last week saw the unveiling of the collection of winning timepieces for the 00/24 European Watch of the Year 2013 awards. First held in the year 2000, this prestigious event is presided over by a panel of horological experts from sectors such as jewellery retail, watch design, as well as independent collecting circles. The nominations were originally proffered in June, and the final results of the competition have now been released, with the winning wristwatches representing a full range of luxury watch brand names such as Zenith, Breguet, Tudor, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Parmigiani.

Here at Banks Lyon, two particular selections within this celebrated assortment of high quality timepieces are of particular interest to us, as they were created by two of the brands that we are proud to stock; namely Chopard and TAG Heuer. Both of these premier Swiss watch manufacturers can trace their origins all the way back to 1860, and each has produced many peerless luxury timepieces during the last decade-and-a-half. As such, it is entirely unsurprising to see them frequenting such a list, representing the peak of their industry as they do.

A limited edition model from the established family of Chopard LUC watches, the L.U.C 8HF Titanium, was the standout winner in its European Watch of the Year category. Named after the founder of Chopard, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, this L.U.C timepiece represents the first 8Hz chronometer in the world. The calibre 01.06-L movement within this wristwatch beats at an astonishing 57,600 vibrations each hour, resulting in timekeeping abilities of an unprecedentedly precise stability. Excelling also in the area of design due to the addition of titanium monobloc lugs and a viewing glass just above the now iconic escapement, this creation from Chopard was an outstanding choice for the 2013 European Watch of the Year awards.

The European Watch of the Year event offers an individual Technology Award for those timepiece manufacturers that have truly pushed the boundaries of their craft, and this year the accolade was secured by TAG Heuer for their MikrotourbillonS chronograph. TAG Heuer Carrera watches have always been a staple for the TAG Heuer brand name, and this particular model features twin tourbillions in order to both keep impeccable time, and run the high-frequency chronograph in the wristwatch. The tourbillion has often been described as the ultimate in luxury watch making complications, and TAG Heuer’s internally developed mechanism is nothing short of revolutionary. It is the fastest tourbillion ever created, rotating every 5 seconds and enabling certification-level precision timing that can be started and stopped as required; a truly deserving winner in its category.

The European Watch of the Year event may only have been in existence for 13 years, but the recipients of the awards are likely to receive even greater levels of exposure in future. At Banks Lyon, our own history stretches back to the 19th century, and we have a wealth of experience when it comes to supplying customers across the globe with the very best timepieces that the luxury watch industry has to offer.
