Commonwealth Games Set to Open with Longines as Timekeeper

Holding the 2012 Olympics in London was an experience that the country is not likely to forget in a hurry, and the outstanding performance of Team GB is something that UK sport has been arguably attempting to recapture ever since. Of course, as exciting as the Olympics undoubtedly was, there are still many other showcase events in the world of athletics to enjoy, with the Commonwealth Games representing the latest competition to take to the centre-stage.

By virtue of being held in Glasgow, and also set to make history as the largest cultural and sporting extravaganza ever to be hosted in Scotland, the Commonwealth Games will command a lot of UK media interest, and whilst it may not quite succeed in setting the nation alight like London 2012, it’s still going to be another milestone in our country’s sporting history. Featuring 70 teams who have been chosen from the Commonwealth of Nations, and with 4500 athletes intending to compete at Glasgow 2014, the sheer scale of the Games is guaranteed to impress.

With just 5 days to go until the opening ceremony, the athletes are doubtless primed and ready to excel in their respective fields, but they’re not the only ones to be eagerly waiting on the commencing of the games, as Swiss horological name Longines is also anticipating a starring role. Longines have been creating precise instruments of timekeeping since 1878, and they have served in such a role at numerous leading sports championships and at the request of various sports federations. As such, they undoubtedly possess the pedigree to fulfil their duties with aplomb.

With 17 separate sports being practised at the Commonwealth Games, more than 190 timekeepers will be needed to keep the disciplines running smoothly, and in excess of 120 tonnes of equipment will be similarly utilised. However, Longines have embraced their role with great enthusiasm, with Vice-President Juan-Carlos Capelli taking place in the Queen’s Baton Relay at the end of June, and the ‘switching-on’ of the Longines Glasgow 2014 Clock being made into a major spectacle at the Central Train Station. This clock has played an integral part in the build-up to the Games, just as Longines’ timekeeping expertise will continue to serve once the event is underway.

Longines have a long and proud history when it comes to watchmaking, fashioning some of the most elegant timepieces on the market, and they apply the same high standards that will be evident at the Commonwealth to each and every one of their watches. As you might expect from such a long-standing company, Longines have built up an impressive portfolio, and here at Banks Lyon we have a huge collection of Longines watches for you to peruse, with such a wide breadth of timepieces on display that we’re confident we’ll have something to suit everyone.
