Ever wondered how to set a Rolex Yacht-Master II?

It has been said that the Yacht-Master II is an extremely difficult watch to operate and certainly more than a little complicated to grasp at first instance. Talk in the office here has recently turned to how to do this; it seems that this highly complicated watch is causing frustration when customers come to ask “how does it work?”

For those watch aficionados amongst us a single demonstration will probably be sufficient to get to grips with the workings of this watch but for the rest of us I have made it my mission to formulate a guide to working this complex timepiece… with a little help from Rolex themselves of course!

Regattas

Unlike the original Yacht-Master, the Yacht-Master II has an extremely complex and innovative new movement with a countdown timer which can be programmed to start between one and ten minutes in order to accommodate regattas with varying start sequences. Rolex have been very clever here because the value is actually ‘remembered’ so when the counter time is reset the countdown hand will return to the last programmed value; a very impressive feat!

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph is the first watch to have a programmable countdown feature with a mechanical memory, which gives it the advantage of being able to be set according to the countdown time of each regatta. Intended for yachting lovers as well as for the experienced skipper, it is an indispensable tool at the starting line of regattas.

Programming the Countdown

  1. Make certain that the countdown is stopped
  2. Turn the Ring Command Bezel 90° counter-clockwise. The ‘Yacht-Master II’ inscription should be aligned with the crown.
  3. Press the reset pusher – the pusher remains depressed.
  4. Unscrew the winding crown to position one (the same as for manual winding).
  5. Turn the winding crown, in the winding direction, to set the desired minute. At ten minutes if the user continues to turn the crown the hand will switch back to zero.
  6. Return the bezel to its original position by rotating it 90° clockwise. This returns the reset pusher to its initial position and unlocks the start/stop pusher.
  7. Push down and screw down the winding crown.

To start the countdown simply push the top pusher (1) – to stop press the pusher again.

To synchronise the countdown simply press the reset pusher (3) briefly and firmly. The minute countdown hand repositions itself to the nearest minute, while the second’s countdown hand returns to 0.

To reset the countdown push down the top pusher (1) to stop the countdown and then press the bottom pusher (3)to reset.

This 42mm watch houses a complete in-house movement from Rolex – the 4160. The result of 35,000 development hours, and 360 individual components, is a watch that is technically brilliant. A column wheel that extends through the main plate connects both sides of the movement enabling perfect synchronisation between the different elements of the countdown. As a result racers can now set their watch to the exact regatta starting sequence

For those who would like something visual to go with these instructions then I recommend visiting the Rolex Website.
