Longines Introduce Moonphase to the Conquest Classic Range

At one point, the complications on wristwatches were fairly limited. There was a time when the now ubiquitous chronograph – with its various sub-dials – was fairly exclusive, yet a cursory glance around the collection of any modern watch manufacturer would suggest a rather different story. In contemporary horology, sub-dials and apertures are now almost expected, and there are numerous different functions on offer that would have been far beyond the reach of most past technologies.

One such complication is the moonphase indicator. We’ve not had much opportunity to discuss the moonphase indicator in the past, although we’ve briefly showcased it when used in a few select Raymond Weil watches and Cartier watches, but Saint-Imier watch brand Longines has recently introduced the function into their Conquest Classic collection. This addition takes the form of a brand new chronograph, and, according to Longines, the moonphase ‘echoes the excellence and elegance of the stars of the equestrian universe’; a sport that is particularly dear to Longines’ heart.

It was the property of ‘elegance’ that Longines was most eager to celebrate, and the moonphase complication was chosen as the ideal complement to such a theme. The Conquest line of watches is specifically dedicated to the equestrian world, so it’s fair to say that a certain careful balancing act was required. The inclusion of a moonphase indicator can sometimes create a rather whimsical wristwatch, yet a Longines Conquest needs to possess a degree of sporting charm too. Looking at the finished products, we think it’s fair to say that Longines have done a highly impressive job.

Three different versions of the new Conquest moonphase are available, with a choice between steel, steel and rose gold, or 18 carat rose gold cases all on offer. Similarly, the buyer can specify their own preference for either a black or silvered dial, and either of these colours is innately suited to form the backdrop for a moonphase indicator. This indicator is undoubtedly the crowning glory amid the sub-dials, and the attention to detail is superb, to say the least, but it’s not the only lunar theme upon the timepiece. In an innovative stroke, there is no aperture to display the date, but instead this information is conveyed by a crescent-moon central hand. This delightful addition also has the advantage of freeing up more space on the dial, preventing it from ever becoming too cluttered.

Technically, these wristwatches are extremely sound, with five bar water resistances and automatic movements as standard. The previously mentioned themes of customisation are also continued onto the strap, as either black alligator leather or a bracelet with steel or rose gold links can be procured. An excellent introduction to an already stylish assemblage, the new Longines Conquest will doubtless be very popular, and will serve to bring the appeal of a moonphase complication to a much wider audience than may have previously been exposed to such a feature.

At Banks Lyon, we have a broad range of Longines watches available for you to peruse, and we’ll continue to bring you news about all of their latest releases as and when we come across them.
