The Banks Lyon Guide to Creating an Heirloom

Anybody who owns an heirloom – whether that may be a luxury watch, a piece of jewellery, or any other treasured item – will be able to tell you how important that possession is. It’s not merely the fact of the piece’s material worth that matters; it’s the meaning that it carries.

So, if you want to create an heirloom for your family, what aspects do you need to consider?

Longevity

An heirloom is intended to be passed down from generation to generation; therefore, it absolutely must have a certain longevity built in. There is no point at all in choosing something that will fall apart or become obsolete in a mere decade or so. Instead, look for products that come with a reputation for the standards of their construction, made with high-quality, durable materials. For example, many of the Swiss watch brands, such as Omega and Breitling watches, are well known for their quality, craftsmanship and durability.

Quality

Whilst some aspects of quality are naturally tied in to longevity, there is something more to consider. Whilst the personal meaning of an heirloom certainly outweighs its material value, an item of practical worth may be more appreciated, and an investment in your chosen piece can be seen as an investment in your family. Something that constantly breaks might quickly become an unwanted burden. Again, good craftsmanship is worth looking for, and indeed paying for, as it will pay dividends over the long term.

Design

There are essentially two options when looking at the design of a piece. On the one hand, you may choose to look for something that has a timeless, classic quality to its design; this will ensure that it will not go out of date, so that your grandchild, great-grandchild or even great-great-grandchild will be able to enjoy it. On the other hand, you might choose something that is particularly of its time; this will offer your descendants a glimpse into your era.

Meaning

By far the most important consideration, however, is the meaning with which you imbue your chosen heirloom.  If you were to purchase an expensive watch and keep it completely secret from your family until they receive their inheritance, then it would simply be an expensive watch. If, on the other hand, it was something that was deeply connected to happy family memories, then it would be an heirloom. Making it a gift on one of life’s major occasions – an engagement, a wedding, a landmark birthday or achievement – is one way to do this. Another is simply to enjoy it while it’s in your own possession – the aforementioned watch as a permanent fixture upon a father’s wrist, for example, would carry far more meaning to the inheritor.

At Banks Lyon, we would be more than happy to advise you on the ideal watch or piece of jewellery to create your new family heirloom. For more information, contact us on 01524 384858 or visit us in our Lancaster store.
