The Bremont Story: Past and Present

The co-founder of the British company that creates luxury Bremont watches has been hailed as a hero after safely landing his vintage 1930s Gypsy Moth biplane following a catastrophic incident of engine failure. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the National Trust property of Canons Ashby House earlier this August, and Bremont have praised the efforts of the pilot, Mr Giles English, as “incredible” after he touched down in potentially dangerous terrain approximately a mile from the Bremont airfield.

Mr. English and his godson, 11 year old Oliver Nuttall, were seriously injured in the incident, and both were subsequently airlifted to appropriate treatment facilities. The preliminary verdict declared that their injuries were not life threatening, and the latest information suggests that both are now recovering well. Some initial witnesses had suggested that the plane was seen to be endeavouring to perform airborne stunts, but Mr. English has subsequently been found to be merely gaining height; a procedure which has been described as “absolutely” standard when trying to identify the optimum space available for an emergency grounding.

Gilles English and his brother Nick founded Bremont in 2002, but did not begin to market their award winning aviation themed wristwatches until 5 years later. Both brothers are ardent pilots, with thousands of hour’s worth of flight experience resulting from the concerted efforts of their father to instruct both brothers in their youth. Ex-RAF pilot and aeronautical engineer Dr Euan English was the instigator for his sons’ passion for aviation and horology, and his tragic death during an aircraft accident in 1995 supplied the necessary momentum for Gilles and Nick to begin their conquest of the global market for high quality luxury watches.

The name “Bremont” was selected following another remarkable incident in the brothers’ storied lives. During a flight in the 1990s, the brothers were obligated, due to unforeseen circumstances, to undertake a forced landing of their biplane in French territory. Staying overnight with the farmer whose field they had alighted in, the brothers were delighted to discover that he was himself a former pilot and a talented engineer. Their mutual interests were immediately made further apparent due to the old man’s love of timepieces, leading the brothers to utilise his name, Antoine Bremont, as the brand name for their eventual range of watches.

Since their inception, Bremont watches have become synonymous with intrinsic values of exceptional craftsmanship and levels of performance that go far beyond the ordinary call of duty. Bremont currently supplies more than 60 aerial squadrons around the world with premier quality wristwatches, and here at Banks Lyon we are proud to stock an extensive range of Bremont chronometers. Bremont is already planning the latest influx of new editions in their perpetually expanding series of timepieces, including the highly anticipated Bremont Codebreaker, and we wish both Nick and Gilles every success in the years to come.
