Sub-Aquatic Stealth – The New Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 UK Limited Edition

By Nina Scally

Many luxury watchmakers fall short of designing a dive watch with the potential to feel as purposeful on dry land as it does beneath the waves. More often than not, a cumbersome dive watch finds itself uncomfortably wedged beneath a tailored cuff, glaringly out of its depth in the boardroom. The new Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Limited Edition, however, sidesteps this pitfall entirely with proportions anchored firmly in the golden era of diving. Fit for vital purpose, whether underwater or on dry land, the new 44mm green and black Superocean Automatic, limited to 500 pieces in the UK, proves there is still a place for a heritage-infused dive watch in the modern world.

When one thinks of Breitling, the mind invariably drifts towards the clouds, conjuring images of the legendary Navitimer on the wrists of dashing pilots, or the majestic vapour trails woven across the sky by the Chronomat-clad Frecce Tricolori. Yet, the Grenchen-based brand is equally adept at conquering the abyss. Today, the Breitling Superocean stands as a paragon of robust luxury, blending heritage-inspired aesthetics with a level of capability that divers and non-divers need every single day.

In recent years, the Superocean collection has been a canvas for vibrant expression. We’ve seen a proliferation of sun-drenched hues - some zesty oranges, vivid turquoises, and brilliant yellows, to name a few. That unapologetic celebration of the surf-and-sand lifestyle is nothing out of the ordinary for Breitling. The Swiss watchmaker has always been at the forefront of the stylish dive watch, even if it’s perhaps one of the lesser celebrated strings to its bow. These watches were designed for sunlit shores and crashing waves, possessing a laid-back, bohemian spirit. However, for those who appreciate the muscular architecture of a formidable dive watch but desire a more sombre, sophisticated palette, the brand’s latest offering may just be the ticket.

The new Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 UK Limited Edition is an exclusive release of just 500 pieces in the UK. It trades the tropical cocktails for a tailored suit, presenting a darker, more brooding interpretation of Breitling’s celebrated diver.

The Heritage of the Deep: Tracing the Superocean’s Lineage

To truly understand the gravitas of this new release, we must cast a wistful glance at the past and Breitling’s foray into the aquatic realm, which began in 1957. At a time when the world was gripped by a newfound fascination with scuba diving, championed by pioneers like Jacques Cousteau, Breitling realised that its mastery of airborne chronographs could be adapted for sub-aquatic survival. The watchmaker released two groundbreaking references: the time-only Reference 1004 and the chronograph Reference 807. These early Superoceans were marvels of mid-century design, boasting concave bezels and elegant dials that defied the utilitarian brutality often associated with early dive watches. With a water resistance of 200 metres, these instruments compromised on absolutely nothing.

However, the aesthetic blueprint for the modern Superocean family, and particularly this new UK Limited Edition, was forged a little later, during the 1960s and 1970s. Breitling introduced the Reference 2005, affectionately known in collecting circles as the "Slow Motion." This was a diving chronograph engineered with a singular, vital purpose: to maximise legibility in the murky depths of the sea. Breitling’s designers recognised that a standard chronograph seconds hand was practically useless to a diver monitoring bottom time. Instead, they modified the movement, allowing the main chronograph hand to track the minutes, taking an entire hour to circumnavigate the dial. To ensure this critical hand could be read instantly in low-light conditions, it was fitted with a massive, luminous square tip.

This functional quirk necessitated bold, blocky indices and thick, stubby hands, creating a highly distinctive, utilitarian visage. It is this exact 1970s DNA that Breitling has resurrected for the current generation of the Superocean. The collection embraces these oversized indicators, paying a handsome tribute to the brand's problem-solving ingenuity while updating the package for the modern connoisseur.

The New Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Limited Edition

The new Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 UK Limited Edition is stealthy and strikingly sophisticated. Before we dissect the nuts and bolts of its mechanical engineering, let us first appreciate the overarching presence of its architecture.

The Case: Sculpted for the Deep

When addressing the physical housing of the new Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Limited Edition, its most imposing yet finely judged proportions stand out the most. The stainless steel case measures a substantial 44 millimetres in diameter. At first glance, this might suggest a behemoth suited only for the most muscular of wrists, but Breitling’s designers are masters of horological trompe l'oeil. The case spans a highly agreeable 50.5 millimetres from lug to lug, meaning it remains neatly seated on the arm without any unsightly overhang.

The case height is a surprisingly svelte 12.6 millimetres. For a watch that boasts a prodigious water-resistance rating of 300 metres, this relatively slender profile is a remarkable feat of engineering. It allows the watch to slip obediently beneath a tailored shirt cuff and features a robust screw-down crown, heavily guarded against accidental knocks. A solid steel, screw-in case back ensures the movement is hermetically sealed against the elements, too. The unidirectional ratcheting bezel is an essential tool for timing dives, and is fitted with a scratch-resistant ceramic insert in deep green, providing a delightfully tactile, precise click with every rotation. Lastly, the cambered sapphire crystal, generously glare-proofed on both sides, ensures the dial remains legible from every angle, whether you’re admiring it under office lighting or the glare of the midday sun.

The Dial: For Nocturnal Use

Breitling has eschewed the high-contrast, stark white rehauts that characterise the main Superocean collection, instead adopting a deliciously moody palette. The central dial is executed in a deep, glossy black lacquer, which is beautifully framed by an expansive, anthracite-lacquered 60-minute scale on the rehaut. This juxtaposition of black and anthracite is highly sophisticated and tool-like. It reduces the visual noise of the dial, bringing a refined, monochromatic harmony to the watch. Against this dark canvas, the oversized, blocky applied indices stand out with a magnificent clarity and have been filled generously with luminescent material to glow tenaciously in the dark.

The hands, of course, are the star of the show, the hour hand of which looks delightfully stout against the blackness of the dial. Yet it is the "Slow Motion" inspired minute hand, with its colossal luminous square, that draws the eye. It is an unapologetic nod to the brand's history, perfectly scaled to balance the wide rehaut. Amidst this sea of greys and blacks, Breitling has cleverly injected a whisper of warmth into the applied Breitling ‘B’ logo at 12 o’clock, rendered in gold. Meanwhile, the "SuperOcean" script and the spear-tipped counterbalance of the sweeping seconds hand are painted in a vibrant, vivid red. These subtle chromatic flourishes elevate the dial, preventing it from feeling overly austere.

The Movement: A Dependable Workhorse

Now it’s time to look at the movement itself. Beneath the solid steel case back beats the Breitling Calibre 17. A true dive watch is, at its core, a piece of life-saving equipment and thus requires an unyielding, dependable workhorse. The Calibre 17, based on the universally respected Sellita SW200-1 architecture, fulfils this brief flawlessly. Operating at a brisk frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), it provides a wonderfully smooth sweep to the red-tipped seconds hand. Featuring 26 jewels and offering a practical power reserve of 38 hours, it is an automatic movement with hand-winding capabilities that will diligently keep time through the most punishing of activities.

How It Wears

Breitling graciously offers two distinct options for this limited edition. For those who favour a resolutely sporty, aquatic aesthetic, the watch is available on a supple, high-quality black rubber strap, paired with a fantastically engineered stainless steel push-button deployant clasp. The feature allows for micro-adjustments on the fly – a godsend when the wrist swells in warmer climates. Alternatively, for a more commanding, luxurious presence, one can opt for Breitling’s signature three-row, slanted-link stainless steel bracelet with brushed outer links and highly polished centre links that catch the light superbly.

In practice, the Superocean Automatic 44 UK Limited Edition is sure to wear with a surprising degree of grace thanks to the clever mitigation of the 44-millimetre diameter by short, downward-curving lugs. Furthermore, there is a well-known visual phenomenon in watch design where darker dials tend to make a timepiece appear smaller and more compact than a lighter-dialled counterpart. The expansive swathes of black and anthracite draw the eye inwards, effectively shrinking the visual footprint of the watch.

Breitling has created a dive watch of exceptional versatility with the new Superocean Automatic 44 Limited Edition. Restricted to a mere 500 pieces exclusively for the UK market, it offers a rare blend of heritage-infused design, unyielding robustness, and refined, monochromatic elegance, proving its ability to transition from deep waters to a dark suit without issue.
