The Breitling Navitimer 1641 is a part of one of the most storied and fashionable watch collections in the world. Since their introduction in 1952, Breitling Navitimers have been a popular choice among many luxury watch enthusiasts.
The name of the Navitimer, like so many other watches is, in fact taken from two words being combined to from the name. The name “Navitimer†originates from the words “navigation†and “timerâ€, the name likely sprung from the intended market for the watch, which was pilots. The Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association or the AOPA as it is often abbreviated to quickly took on the Navitimer as its official watch, making it an instant success among aviators and lending the watch huge credibility in the entire market.
With new incarnations of the classic design being released every few years, Breitling has kept the Navitimer at the forefront of their range of watches for over 50 years, even today watches such as the Breitling Navitimer 1461 remain incredibly popular the world over. As the Navitimer family has grown, the original design and style have been altered with each new model to fit the tastes of the time; probably the most notable of these changes was the 1973 release, the Quartz Navitimer. Although this watch bore the name of the original Navitimers, the similarities were limited, with the Quartz featuring an LED screen. The release was a result of the influx of Japanese watches to the western market, these were cheaper and often times just as reliable as their traditional Swiss counterparts.
The Navitimer continues to be a huge part of Breitling’s operations; their advertising campaigns and trade shows almost always heavily feature the latest incarnation of the Navitimer, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to the storied design.
