Gents’ Watch of the Week: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Anti-Magnetic

The New Year may have begun, but there is still ample time to celebrate one of the most noteworthy horological triumphs of 2013; namely the outstanding Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Anti-Magnetic watch. In 1969, Omega famously showed their disdain for the challenge of zero-gravity by creating the very first timepiece to reach the surface of the moon, and now they have built upon this feat of engineering by forming a wristwatch that will remain similarly undisturbed in the face of the strongest magnetic fields. Quite simply, this timepiece is a landmark advancement that has changed the face of watchmaking forever.

In terms of the aesthetics, the Seamaster Aqua Terra conforms to a classic stainless steel theme. The relatively flat case is 42 mm in diameter and is complemented by a matched bracelet with a finely brushed finish.  Omega has then used a contrasting lacquered black dial, with a sunbrushed centre and polished sapphire crystal, along with yellow and white detailing to generate instant appeal. The timepiece also displays the same vertical lining that has become a feature of all Omega Aqua Terra watches. With a date aperture and an understated crown on the right hand side of the timepiece, this is a watch that appears timeless; yet the true significance of the Seamaster Aqua Terra actually lies beneath the surface of its casing.

Within the case of the Seamaster Aqua Terra resides a Co-Axial caliber 8508 automatic movement; an augmentation that is one of the most extraordinary innovations to grace the world of watchmaking for some years. It is this mechanical movement that has garnered the timepiece such acclaim; as it enables the Seamaster Aqua Terra to be the pioneer among truly antimagnetic wristwatches. No previous effort has ever attained the level of performance exhibited by this Omega chronometer, as it will stand unwavering even against magnetic fields in excess of 15, 000 gauss. This genuinely remarkable invention was implemented by a veritable plethora of engineers, and can conform to these prodigious specifications thanks to its unique design.

The secret behind the Seamaster Aqua Terra lies within the absence of a protective container. Other attempts to defy magnetism have always relied upon such a consideration, yet Omega has once again upheld its unparalleled reputation for innovation by forming the movement itself out of non-ferromagnetic materials. Internal cases not only fluctuated in effectiveness when exposed to permanent magnetism, but they also brought negative consequences from an aesthetic point of view as well. Because the Co-Axial movement within the Seamaster Aqua Terra is intrinsically antimagnetic, such drawbacks are entirely circumnavigated, allowing the timepiece to also flaunt a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback with impunity.

Magnetism has always been a concern for mechanical watches. Yet Omega has not focused upon the resolving of this problem to the neglect of more ‘ordinary’ considerations; as the Seamaster Aqua Terra is supremely capable in all areas. The Co-Axial movement and accompanying Si14 silicon balance spring mean that the warranty of this timepiece is  four complete years, and with a water resistance of up to 150 metres this chronometer appears genuinely indefatigable in normal circumstances.  With regards to form or function, no one could hail this Seamaster Aqua Terra as anything but a consummate victory.

With the creation of this Seamaster Aqua Terra, Omega has exceeded all plausible expectations to release a chronometer which is scarcely believable in terms of its aptitude. This horological icon can be yours today for 36 monthly payments of £92.67 and a further 20% deposit.
